First time here, heard about this bakery through word of mouth and so we tried it out.
I think they are most famous for their bolo bread - would have to say they were delicious. Flaky outside, soft and sweet inside.
We had their bbq bolo, milk butter bolo and plain bolo. The bbq was an interesting combination of char siu pork fill and sweet bolo bun. It wasn't my favorite combination of savory and sweet but both filling and bun were good. Milk butter had a nutty and sweet bun, filling was a coconut flake texture. Plain bolo was simple and sweet.
My favorite was their filled brioche donuts. Tried the apple and custard filled ones. Custard was my favorite - if you are a fan, must try! Would probably go back for these.
We also ordered a tiramisu cake for my dad's birthday to try. It was a decent cake, soft and light. More of a subtle tiramisu flavor and a hint of the coffee. Some of the cake had overwhelming cocoa powder from the top decor. They also gave us a tiny 'happy birthday' sign and paper plates with tiny plastic skewers forks.
Hubs got their taro smoothie and loved it - fairly sweet and creamy. Recommend if you're a fan of taro drinks and have a sweet tooth. For me, it was quite sweet.
Pricing was decent at around $2-3 per item. It varied depending on what the item was.
Overall, I do like this place and would recommend if you wanted...
Read moreWe stumbled across Sunmerry on Sunday while shopping across the mall. They have a great variety of sweets and non sweets and the prices are very reasonable. We got a variety of items (everything from the mushroom roll to the ham and cheese bun) we ended up with about 8 items and our total was well under $20. I toasted my mushroom bun and added a little butter, 1st bite was a bit sweet but after that it was buttery and flaky (sort of like a croissant). My husband and son got the ham and cheese bun and loved it, it was flaky, rich and tasty.
We also signed up for their frequent buyer program with our email and receipts complimentary cream bun (like a cream puff). Haven't tried it yet but if like everything else we bought I am sure it will be equally as tasty. The store is open and bright and it is easy to grab whatever looks good to you. Everything is individually wrapped and there is a case with cold items (including some beautiful desserts and cakes).
The staff was so friendly and helpful. They recently opened (within the last week) and had some great suggestions based on what patrons we're looking for. I believe this is the 1st store here in San Diego (next closest is Irvine). Well worth making a visit to, we'll be...
