Sezchuan food has some great flavors and the competition is fierce on convy. Between various size "Spicy" dwellings ( House, City, village, county etc.) this is a relatively well put together alternative which actually feels like a restraunt instread of a DMV breakroom that serves food by day and hosts animal deathmatch betting in the shadow of night.
Unfortunately the service is exactly the kind of terrible you would expect from a delicious Chinese restaurant. Don't ask for recommendations; if you are white, they will try and steer you away from spicy dishes and prettymuch every dish is good or else why would they serve it... right? Oh and brown sauce can be like 20 different things so if you don't know the dishes, you won't know the dishes. Take a gamble but order like you know exactly what everything is. It feels empowering and if something is indeed too spicy, as warned... POWER THROUGH IT! Your weak bowels can be our little secret. Maybe its kinda like a muscle where it will become stronger. Either way we will prove ourselves and every waitress on the whole block wrong even if...
Read moreThe flavor and quality of each dish we had was genuinely top notch. Probably the best authentic style Chinese food I've had so far.
We had the chef special fried rice, chili oil wantons, Dan Dan noodles, dried red pepper chicken and fish fillet in thickening hot chili oil.
I've always wanted to try real Szechuan food so I could experience the Sichuan Peppercorn that numbs your mouth. I have to say, after all the hype, I really didnt like the experience of the overwhelming numbing and somewhat zingy/tangy/citrus flavor of the peppercorn. My wife and cousin didn't like it either. To be clear, I love to eat extremely strange and difficult foods that most people would never even try.
The service was attentive and the food came very quickly, though the server spoke almost no English, so you won't be able to ask questions or make adjustments. Which is fine, but you just need to be ready for that.
If the food didn't have the Sichuan Peppercorn in it (some dishes don't, like the chef special fried rice, which was amazing), it would be the best Chinese food...
Read moreSublime. Authentic, eclectic szechuanese food. The waiter was very patient and wonderful with my elderly mother, who knows no Chinese and could have had a disaster of a night. Spicy dishes are spicy, numbing dishes are numbing, dishes with “piquancy” in the name had a wonderful blend of herbs and spices. We ate through the chefs special Ham Hock, which I HIGHLY recommend. We got spicy shrimp, chongqing smoked duck, and the special spicy, herby pork tripe. Page one items are really something else. The ham hock was soft enough to slice up with a spoon, collagen bits and all. I’ve already mentioned the strong flavors, I should mention that the chef is clearly invested in balance. Perfect ratios of all flavor elements, but just a LOT of them. With the closing of red moon noodle house, this and the next door Shan Xi kitchen will be my permanent go tos. Definitely tell your waiter your experience level with Szechuan food- the intensity was varied for my and my mother’s tastes in a very...
