Tacaliente has been the absolute best Mexican restaurant to open in Hilcrest in YEARS. The ambience is amazing! So different from what it used to be. You can tell the new owners have put in a lot of work to make it a better environment! Since they have opened my family and I come here at least 3 times a week for so many reasons. The taste and quality of the food is unmatched and the pricing is great!! My brother and I shared the Al pastor fries and the Caliente Super Bowl and they were delicious The front of house staff and chefs are incredibly accommodating and friendly. The owner of the business himself has personally come up to us to greet us while having our meal to make sure we're doing well every time we're there. And can we just talk about those happy hour Micheladas!!!! DELICIOUS. One of the best I've ever had and I don't even really like beer to begin with lol

Excellent counter service taqueria in a casual setting with great food at very reasonable prices. I came in after seeing the restaurant featured on Channel 8's taco Tuesday. The carne asada is marinated for 3 days resulting in flavor-packed, tender steak wrapped in soft corn tortillas and garnished with fresh onion and cilantro. The chicken enchiladas were delicious in a flavorful guajillo sauce with complexity of flavors belying the modest location producing it. The potato flautas were filled with deliciously spiced mashed potatoes wrapped in extra crispy fried tortillas and topped with fresh guacamole. The huevos rancheros were nice. There is a salsa bar with an assortment of superb salsas and pickled carrots. For taqueria fare at these price points, it doesn't get much better.

Delicious taco shop in the heart of University City with the best food and really fun menu items! I was excited to try the tacos and carnitas nachos, both were amazing! My husband got cheese enchiladas with red sauce, the sauce was so flavorful and it was served with rice and beans (which were also amazing!) But my favorite thing about Tacaliente was the crunch wrap they offer on their menu, either served with chicken or beef! I’ve never seen this item at a taco shop before and it was honestly the best Crunchwrap I’ve ever had. Because the tortilla and tostada were made fresh it was just so delicious! They also have a full salsa bar with hot carrots!

Asked if I could use their restroom and they said I would have to order something first. Which is fine, definitely not something I have a problem with. I did ask if I could order after I use their restroom. I didn't want my food to be ready and get cold while I was using the restroom. When I told them that they still said no. but they did say they could make my order after I'm done using the restroom. A minor inconvenience but I chose to comply and ordered before using the restroom. After I was done, they did wait for me to start my order. I ordered 2 churros for $6. When I got my order though the churros were very stiff and hard, almost like they were overcooked, and it hurt my teeth to bite into them. When I returned my order back and told them the churros were hard they agreed to make me a new order of churros. The second time though, the churros were cold on the inside. Like freezer temperature cold and the outside still was pretty stiff. Not as stiff as the first order but still, almost stale consistency. After being unsatisfied twice, I returned the second order and asked if I could get a refund. She did ask I wanted to order something else instead but I told her no I rather have my money back. Which then she didn't say anything and started pushing buttons on the register for a couple minutes (which I just assumed she was issuing a refund into the register, but I don't even know now what she was doing). After a few minutes go by of her pressing buttons on the register she then said no she could still not give me a refund and she could only offer me something different to order from the menu. I did not want to chance getting a third order I didn't like so I told her no and returned my second order. Reluctantly, I just let a random stranger order something from the menu instead. Very disappointed overall. I pretty much paid them $7 to use a...

We stumbled on this place just scrolling on Google looking for a Taco Tuesday spot. Boy were we in for a treat! Upon our first visit we were greeted by a very sweet cashier and she was very patient with us as we looked at the different items on the menu. Let me tell you, these battered fish tacos are no joke! They are the best we’ve ever had, and we’ve had so many fish tacos in our time as we are natives of SD and love a good taco shop! The cook is really awesome here and every item that we’ve ate there is top notch! We also really enjoy coming in and seeing Matt (the owner) there! He’s so nice! He makes you feel like family when you come in and we’ve seen him treat everyone with the same welcoming spirit, I can’t say that about all restaurants, a lot of them just treat you like a commodity but not here. We really enjoy our chats with him, he’s a cool guy and down to earth-when you meet him you will see exactly what I mean!

Lately we’ve been really disappointed in the food quality at various restaurants, it seems like ever since Covid hit that everyone jacked up the prices and quality went down along with service. In contrast, this place will have you leave full of goodness and have a memorable experience to take along with it! Just try it once and you will be sold for sure. Definitely our new spot for my family, would...

Went in because I was near by and the name looked cool. Ordered a quesadilla. Pretty simple. I get that there was a little of a language barrier, but I do know some Spanish. What was explained to me sounded clear enough. The menu said that it came with a protein cheese, sour cream, and pico de gallo. If I want to guacamole on the side, it would be a dollar extra I ordered the guacamole, guacamole and sour cream came on the inside which I was told both came on the outside I said I didn’t wanna pay for extra pico de gall, but also didn’t receive the pick that was supposed to come with it in the inside. The . chicken seems pretty small as the guacamole and sour cream seemed to be most of the quesadilla. I also ordered a Diet Coke and pointed to the fountain, but after paying with my credit card she told me the fountain didn’t work and that she didn’t know how to refund the soda part of the transaction. So she gave me $3.28 cash back (the soda was 3.49 plus tax meaning I was owed a little more than $3.75 back but she didn’t understand so I gave up. From talking to her it seems like she understood that she gave me 328 and I was supposed to get 349, but she never went to get me the rest of the change. All in all for a quesadilla and some rice I spent over $20 not counting, though soda I was robbed on. LOL no...
