Dumpling House — Restaurant in San Francisco

Good location (convenient to Castro Theater) and decent ambience; about what you would expect for an establishment in its price range. The dumplings we had were fresh, straight out of the steamer or fry pan (for the gyoza, for instance). The custard dumplings in particular were delicious, although definitely dessert material. One of our party members was vegetarian, and we were disappointed to find only 4 vegetarian items on the entire menu (custard dumplin, stirfried green beans, scallion pancakes and veggie gyoza)--everything else had some sort of meat in it. But, if that's not an issue for you, then Dumpling House is worth a try if you're in the neighborhood and have a craving for OK dumplings (not great, but not bad either; just about average). However, if you're looking for a true dumpling or dim sum culinary experience, there are definitely better places at similar prices elsewhere in SF and the Bay Area.

3.5 stars for food, and minus .5 stars for messing up our check. They did fix it, but it took a while and going through 2 different waiters due to a language barrier. Normally this isn't an issue, but when you're in a rush to get to a show and the waiter is struggling to understand English while you're trying to explain that the tab is off by almost 40%, then it becomes an issue. Great clean restaurant with delicious food, modern amenities that helped speed up the ordering process, and super friendly staff located in a fun, all-inclusive, and colorful part of the city. We only had to wait about 15 minutes for an open table (we arrived around 12:30 on a Saturday). We signed in on their iPad waitlist that would send you alerts through yelp. Once seated, we were promptly served large glasses of water with a separate cold bottle of water that we could refill our own glasses throughout our dining experience (I wish more restaurants would do that!). We had the option of using a paper menu but opted for the QR code which allowed us to immediately place an order. The online menus through the QR code had helpful pictures to help you decide what to get. The food is so fresh, delicious, and beautifully prepared! I highly recommend starting with the Garlic Green Beans; I couldn’t stop eating them! My girlfriend and I loved our experience at Dumpling House. The fact that ordering food from the web app is fantastic - especially since everyone at a table can add food to the order from their own phones with the given QR code.

There was only one person working all the tables; but given that orders were placed through the web app, this allowed them to serve all tables while orders were placed. The server went above and beyond in terms of making sure our glasses were always full, that we had time to look at the menu, and check in to see how we enjoyed our food. She was friendly, kind, and didn’t hover when we made our order through the app.

When we got our food, it arrived quick, and in a manner that allowed us to try each dish. Each dish we ordered from the pork dumplings to the fried wontons were amazing and straight from the kitchen.
