This bar is a great asset to the gay community and has a wonderful vibe and patio. That being said, on busy nights the bathroom situation is so bad that were any public health department to see it would be shut down. A recent night I was there at least 100 people were in attendance (likely double or triple that) and the 1 men's and 1 women's rooms (both used by both) had lines at least 20 people long the entire evening. The men's room had no sit-down toilet, only urinal (2) on the floor, and an inch of standing urine with no toilet paper. The women's was no better. It was anticipated to be a very busy night, and apparently no one extra had been hired or no one there had been told to check the restrooms for servicing. Bars are meant for drinking, and drinking leads to pissing, and so though I'd like to give this great place and community hub more stars I think the bathroom situation probably breaks many codes for a reason and it's very irresponsible of owners to let...

This was awful. A woman at the door named Kristin, was so unhappy to even be doing her job, she looked pissed off from the moment we walked up. We asked her if she took cards for the cover, she rolled her eyes at us an said it was a cash only bar, which is fine, but why be hateful?!. Then she pushed me out of the way with the swinging door PUSHED ME and I said why are you being so rude to us? And she said we weren't getting in "her" bar tonight. When I asked her why, she said she didn't like my tone. I asked to speak to the manager and she said she was the door manager and that there was no one I could talk to and told me to leave. We were 100% sober and it was just the start of our night. I've never had someone be so unkind and unprofessional. Defiantly not the feeling you want when you're visiting a city or in the LGBT community. I would never recommend this place! Get friendlier staff Rio, or maybe just someone who doesn't hate their job!...

Cheap drinks, chill atmosphere, and lots and lots of hipsters. I've been to this bar twice and both times I had a pretty good time. Like I said the drinks are cheap...really cheap ($3 rail drinks and beer) and they don't stiff you on the booze! Although the inside of the bar is pretty small, with an area in the back with one pool table and shuffle board, the outside is BALLER. I was not expecting that patio when I walked into Rio, but I was pleasantly surprised. There are a lot of hipsters, which I like in comparison to the gropey creeps on Polk. Seemed to be pretty 420 friendly cause I saw a lot of people smoking but there was a bouncer sniffing around (not sure if that was to join in orrrrrr not). Anyway, definitely a solid bar for a saturday night in...

If I could give 0 stars I would. I came in to visit my sister for her bachelorette party. Most of us are gay or bi which normally wouldn’t be relevant but when we got off our party bus they asked if we were gay and then said we don’t let people in with party buses. Then they proceeded to tell us that it was normally a $15 cover but for us specifically it will be $30. When we asked if there was someone we could speak to they were all very rude and disrespectful. Never in my life. Don’t come here. They’re discriminatory. Because apparently if you don’t look gay enough you aren’t allowed in. Didn’t realize that, even in this climate you had to write, “I’m gay” on your shirt for you to be let in.

The best kind of dive bar. Come as you are - great bartenders who know how to manage a busy bar top, and the best patrons in the Mission. We stumbled upon it on our trip to San Francisco, and it was the best accidental discovery of my week. Don't listen to the bad reviews, I can't say anything bad about the place and I'd like to think I have an eye for good bars with good people. Bring in outside food, as they don't have a kitchen (but be kind and clean up after yourself), and oh, it's one of the stalwart gay bars in town. It's the place where anyone can come in and be themself, regardless of how you roll. I'll be back.
