Great (like REALLY great) burger — maybe even one of the best in SF!!
If you’re a fan of In-n-Out burger, then you’ll love the smash burger. It’s got a thousand island sauce reminiscent of the fast food chain, but elevated with caramelized onions, fresh pickles, double smashed patties, and a soft brioche bun.
I’m a BIG fan of bread and butter pickles and was pleasantly surprised by their addition in the burger — but if you don’t like the flavor of them, make sure to order yours without. The fries were good, though nothing particularly special. The tables all had mustard, ketchup, and hot sauce, so if you’re a fellow saucy guy like myself you can add to your heart’s content!
The service was really great. We ordered two burgers but only one came out — after about 10 minutes of waiting, we told the bartender and he realized he never put the other one in (and hadn’t charged us for it on our order). He was very apologetic and quickly brought us the second one, on the house! It was an honest mistake, and he made sure to make it right. They clearly value their customers here, and we appreciate that!!
The vibe here is no-frills but is really clean with a bit of a 50’s diner feel. There were lots of diners on their way to the Giants game (as we were walking over to Frankie’s, we heard a mom in a Giants jersey telling her family how good Frankie’s was and how close they were to the restaurant. They arrived just after us!)
You can expect the food to come out quickly and the beer to be cold. Let’s...
Read moreBeen twice. Frankie's has lots of potential but hasn't fulfilled it yet. I'm in the area 2-4 times/week and would love to make Frankie's a go-to spot.
The environment and location are fabulous. The remodel is tasteful and clean. The breakfast burrito was good, but a bit small. OG Benedict was tasty and cooked perfectly, but potatoes fell short on both counts. Grocery store OJ doesn't fit with the food they're trying to serve; fresh OJ would be a welcome upgrade. A companion's blueberry pancakes were small and had a grand total of 4 blueberries across 6 pancakes. (And, when we mentioned this, the server told me that the manager was out that he couldn't adjust the bill.) The breakfast tacos were good, but quite small and presented ungracefully. Overall, the food was good, but ungenerous and underwhelming for the price.
Perhaps the biggest shortcoming, especially for a place with "Java House" in the name, is that they have only pre-made drip coffee -- no espresso drinks at all. They should either get an espresso machine and get good at it, or they should drop Java House...
Read moreThis is a quick service restaurant where you order at the bar. They add a mandatory minimum 18% gratuity to your bill before any food arrives and with no actual table service. It left a pretty sour taste in my mouth to be honest. When I asked why this was in place, the person taking my order gave me a bit of attitude and told me "this is what most restaurants are doing now" which is certainly not true. She also told me that "we can take it off if you don't want to give us a tip" as if i wasn't planning on doing so at all. I am not a poor tipper by any means but I prefer to base my tip on the service I receive and not before I actually receive my food. The food itself was decent overall but quite pricey (over $80 for three people including the mandatory 18% tip) for a hot dog, fish and chips and fish tacos. I wont...
