This is my second time here. The first time, despite the empty tables, we were seated on the third level in the back. I asked why we couldn’t seat by the window, and the server just shrugged. We’re Asians and, my family didn’t want to cause a scene so I let it go.
Today, Thanksgiving Day, we made a reservation one month ahead. Restaurant even called two days ago to confirm. Another customer in line ahead of us said the restaurant doesn’t reserve specific tables but it’s first come first serve, and that was why he got in line early. We were probably the 7th or 8th party in line.
Door opened at 11:30, and sure enough every single party were seated by the window. My sister gave the reservation. We don’t have a typical Asian last name. The hostess looked carefully at the tablet. I asked if we could sit by the windows. No response. Hostess wasn’t looking up. I asked again, nothing. She finally told another employee to take us to the balcony. I asked again if we could sit by the window. Nothing. The employee started walking away, my family started following, and I said no. Is there another table? She still didn’t look at me but changed the table to the second level. It wasn’t the window table but better than the other choice. Another employee said the original table assigned was actually on the third level in the back. The only difference between us than the other customers seated directly by the window tables was the skin color. We were wearing Sunday’s best — better than business casual but not wedding formal.
The server was lackluster at best. He spent more time standing looking outside the window than checking on his customers.
Cherry mule - it didn’t taste like cherry or ginger beer. Save your money.
Calamari and shrimp starters - shrimp was good, calamari was overly salty, and marinara was bland.
Ahi boom boom nachos - good but it’s not nachos. It’s just ahi poke with five pieces of taro chips.
Stuffed salmon - good main dish and veggies but mashed potatoes were bland and plain.
Sea bass with udon - good fish, bland sauce, and bland udon.
Zabuton steak with fries - good steak, inedible salty fries. I told the server about the fries. His response, “oh.”
I asked for the restrooms, and I was waved to the corner area on the third level. The third level where other Asians were seated. Outside the restrooms looked like the storage space with forgotten items. There were two neutral gender bathrooms. First one was in used so I used the one by the window. The door had to be jiggled repeatedly before it locked. There was no soap. I was told afterwards there are another set of restrooms on the first level. The nicer one. Gee, thanks.
Desserts were good but I was just ready to go home. I couldn’t even enjoy the view.
On the way out, the hostess was firmly talking down to two employees until she told them where they could sit the older African American couple waiting on the bench. There were plenty of open tables by the window. I don’t know why they had to wait.
Oh well, they got our money today but there won’t be a next time. I work hard for my money only to be treated based on...
Read moreCeliacs beware: yummy but gut wrenching food. I could not get a straight story from the waitress or the chef. Illness was Swift and furious. Be very careful and insist that they separate, especially that they don't cook anything in the fryer. They seem A couple steps above clueless. It's a pity because the food was tasty. The service was okay. Maybe not as informed as it could have been but, friendly and helpful and good-natured. The views are spectacular and a cloudy Sunset always makes for views that look like something painted by a Dutch Master. Restroom had no toilet paper or paper towels and I had to leave a 90 something-year-old standing waiting while I ran to the bartender who couldn't care less and deflected me to the front desk which was down a level. I had to call down to her and ask her to please come up. The hostess was very kind and came running to try and find some paper products. At a place with these prices that should never be. They need to be more on top of their game. They were warm and friendly and welcoming, which we really appreciate it. But if you're going to invite someone over, you need to have the place ready. People with allergies need to be extremely careful. To pay all that money and to lose the meal right after is a complete waste. It is sad. They need to do a better job with kitchen staff. Education from the top down. Servers need far far better info about the allergy and that even when Foods just touch a person can get ill. Other five star restaurants, even four stars that are careful we have no problem with. It's just a matter of them being more aware and intentional. Parking was easy underneath.. this is a very difficult place for the elderly as it's multi-level and set on a steep hill. The nice solution is parking in the lot and taking the elevator to the front door of the restaurant. They do have a handicap half elevator inside the restaurant to make up for the distance between levels. It was a fun experience and very tasty. We wish the wait staff had been more honest about how big heavy and filling the desserts were because we ended up wishing we had split. So if you've had a full meal, just split something. The restaurant has two really nice private rooms which are great for board meetings, family anniversaries and birthdays, etc. The one on the lower level is brighter and cheerier with a view. Except for getting so ill on the food. I was wishing for a big family party to fill that...
Read moreOutstanding! My family and I decided to go here for my girlfriend's birthday dinner. I placed the reservation with no problems on Open Table, even for being a peek time of 6:30pm. I called in and let them know we were celebrating a birthday, and also requested a view of the bay. Both requests were accommodated perfectly, even went above and beyond by customizing the menu with the header of "Happy Birthday Katherine" and the date! I couldn't tell you how special this made her feel to see this, and even better they rolled up our menus, put a bow on them, and presented them to us at the end to take home. My girlfriend ordered their 7oz Filet Mignon and of course added the Oscar style and garlic mashed potatoes to accompany her steak. She absolutely loved it! From her words of "melt in my mouth filet" and "delicious crab," she was in heaven with her meal. Prior to her meal, we split a wedge salad, which even when split was still a great portion and beautiful presentation. For my meal, I am more of a rib-eye lover, so was a little bummed to see a top sirloin or porterhouse as my alternatives. However this restaurant is know for its sea food so I was not too bummed, especially when the top sirloin came out perfectly with still some tenderness and good flavor. Plus to accompany the steaks they garnish the plate with some great grilled vegetables. My other family members ordered the pan seared scallops and then the sea scallop and shrimp Newberg. Both of them loved their seafood dishes and were happy with the size of the scallops as well. Then to top it off, our waiter, Glen, brought out a delicious cake with ice cream and a lit candle for us to sing a little birthday song for her. All in all, the food was outstanding and the service was very professional and on point, even with the manager stopping by and asking for drink refills after delivering the meal (did not catch her name). Next visit into San Francisco we will make sure to plan a meal at this beautiful restaurant and enjoy the view of the bay...
