Honestly I was a bit skeptical when I looked up the existing reviews for this newly opened location of Supreme Dumpling in Stonestown Galleria. Just a few days into a soft opening and the reviews were already flooded with a ton of 5 stars on Yelp, many of whom I assumed were invited to the friends and family opening nights. Still, the tantalizing pictures and effusive praise from these reviews drew me in, so I decided to stop by on Saturday evening with my wife and daughter. I’m so glad that I did, because the food and service were fantastic, and I have a suspicion that this restaurant will get very popular (and much more crowded) in the weeks to come.
Given the soft opening, this location is not taking reservations yet, so around 6:30pm we walked up to the hostess and put our name down for a table. The hostess quoted us 30 minutes, and almost like clockwork, about 30 minutes later I got a text that our table was ready. They’re still working out a few operational kinks, so when we arrived, there was a huge line at the hostess stand. Most of the people were waiting to put their name on the waitlist, so I just walked to the front and checked in, at which point we were seated.
When we got to our table, the waitress offered us a high chair and a plastic kids bowl for our daughter (who is a toddler). It’s a pretty kid friendly atmosphere, as we saw plenty of families with kids both young and older.
The menu is well rounded, with a solid assortment of xiaolongbao, fried buns, rice dishes, noodle soups, and veggies. We ordered the standard pork xlb, the Szechuan xlb, braised beef appetizer, pork chop fried rice plate, pork wonton noodle soup, and seasonal veggie dish. While not quite as pretty as the ones at din tai fung, I found these xlb to be just as tasty, if not even slightly more flavorful. I particularly enjoyed the Szechuan version (pictured), which had a decent kick. The other standout item for me was the pork chop rice plate - it was a sizable portion, and both the pork chop and fried rice were the exact flavor that you look for in a dish like this. It also paired nicely with the chili crisp at the table.
The service was attentive and friendly, and our servers made us feel comfortable despite our toddler bouncing around and making a bit of a mess. Due to the soft opening, our noodle soup was slightly delayed, and I was pleasant surprised when I saw they had comped it for us on our final bill.
I’m looking forward to coming back again soon to try a bunch of other items on the menu that we skipped this...
Read moreOver 600 reviews in a month really made me want to see what the hype was about. Made a Yelp reservation a week in advance. Arrived about 10 mins before my reservation so didn't expect to get seated right away. When I checked in, host told us our table is not ready. First thing she asked was "can we split up your table? " umm I'm with 4 of our children so that definitely was not going to work. Then told me she would just text me when our table is ready. Kinda annoyed since I did make a reservation and didn't tell me how long I would need to wait.
20+ mins after my reservation time, we finally were seated. Our server was nice but very inexperienced. When asked what the cold Taiwan noodle was, she told me she didn't know. My son has a nut allergy, so I always need to know. Asked if there were nuts and she said "probably " yet she was hesitant. I asked to please check.
We ordered a lot of food to try and my son decided on the pork chop noodle since they ran out of beef noodle. Food arrived in random order mid way through, our server said it was last call for all items, including dessert so we order a few more items, but I just requested our dessert be last if possible.
Food: Pork xlb- 6.5 out of 10 ( soupy but skin was kind thick, flavor mid) Crab xlb - 4 out of 10 ( no soup, skin was thick, flavor blah) Mini pan fried bao - 3 out of 10 ( some were broken so soup came out and burnt) Truffle fried rice - 8 out of 10 ( good flavor , prob my fav item) Green beans -2 out of 10 ( veggies were old and stringy ) Tan tan noodle - 2 out of 10 (hella salty) Chicken soup - 7 out of 10 (pretty good ) Scallion noodles - 6 out of 10 Pork chop noodle since- 0 out of 10 (NEVER CAME TO THE TABLE!!!!!)
Food came out so random and my poor son sat there waiting for his food. Finally asked her server and she said " sorry they cancelled it because we ran out of pork chop". WTH!! she said she forgot to tell us. My son sat through dinner without getting his meal.
To make things worse , when we got the bill, they charged us for it! Something we never received!
Food was mediocre and dining experience was subpar. I really believe half of these reviews are not real. As nice as the staff was, they were super inexperienced and no manager seemed to check - in on things. Pretty disappointing and I don't plan...
Read moreThis place tries hard to copy Din Tai Fung but misses the target by over a mile. Went there today for a late lunch after doing some shopping at the mall, there was a short waiting list. The check in hostess was friendly and welcoming but was completely confused or lost in her job role. I believe she accidentally let 2 people that put themselves behind me get a table ahead of me. But I wasn’t completely sure so I didn’t want to say anything. There were a few open tables anyways so I assumed she should fill those up eventually. But little did I know they didn’t want to open up that section for whatever reason it might be. Then she kept on calling the same 2 names over and over for nearly 5 minutes. Getting a bit annoyed, I walked up to her and told her that she should move down the list since nobody is acknowledging their names being called out. This is just plain courtesy. Calling the same names for several occasions for a few minutes is too much. Finally she decided to sit my party in the section that was supposed to be closed off. The other waitlists guests were also directed to sit in that area too. Why can’t they just open up that section in the first place to let more customers seated instead of waiting? It’s beyond ridiculous in my opinion. Finally, sat down and the one waitress was managing multiple sections by herself. The others were busy talking to each other in the front or carrying out food. One of the plates that I didn’t ordered was accidentally brought over to my table. One of the plates I ordered went to a wrong table as well. It’s a very chaotic system. Maybe they are still working out the kinks since this place opened up about 3 weeks ago. The food was nothing to rave about. The XLB was somewhat decent overall. But the noodle soup bowls were absolutely underwhelming. Portions are really small, taste wasn’t there. I had many braised beef Taiwanese noodle soup around and this one was the worst out of all places I had eaten at. I hope things will improve for them, but if there was a Din Tai Fung around the area, it’ll be game over for this...
