Aw man, I want to like this place. Really. The flavor combinations of all the rolls are always really interesting, and the vibe feels like it should be a fun place to come on a weekend.
But after coming here a few times, it's just not super appealing to me anymore.
Quick gripes:
Rolls (the bites) are astronomically large. I know "Americanized sushi" is a thing, but this is borderline comical. It's to the point where my girlfriend has to bite into some rolls THREE times to fit the whole piece in her mouth. It's absurd. We tried asking them to maybe cut them a little thinner on our 2nd visit, but no luck.
Fish is consistently cut a little haphazardly, and doesn't taste super fresh— both of which are only intensified by the massive size of each bite you take.
TVs are playing (typically whatever game is on) in every field of view, which might just be a personal issue of mine, but it makes it feel like a sports bar.
At the end of the day, it's a new, fun spot and seems like a good place to go for a big group dinner. In fact it almost feels like everything here has been designed to be bigger— from the size of the menu to the drinks to the rolls. But if it's dinner time and you're just in the mood for some great sushi, SC will leave you wishing you got a little more of a...
Read moreThe food was good, even a great mix of classic and innovative Sushi and Japanese fare; please note I ate all vegetarian items. I had a couple of their specialty rolls that were innovative and enjoyed as well as some veg. gyoza that were over-fried (i was expecting steamed, but pan fried would have been fine if they hadn't been so crunchy and over cooked as to be dark browned and brittle outside). I also had the house cold filtered sake which was pleasant. The service is where they really needed improvement. I was admittedly there during an odd time of day between lunch and dinner, but I had a hard time getting waitstaff to follow through on taking orders, following up, bringing bill and garage validation. I had no less than 4-5 different people, which was confusing, and even if they were on a shift change, there was no indicated hand off and it all felt very random. I was completely done with gyoza and nearly done with my first roll before the waitress remembered my sake and trying to get more water or anything else was an effort of trying to find and flag down assorted staff. I never did see the original waittress again. All in all, the sushi rolls were good enough that I would be willing to give them another try at dinnertime to see if it was just an...
Read moreWhere to begin. First want to say that the staff is actually pretty good and was happy with the “service”. Ordered a bento box and it was hands down the worst sushi I’ve had (and I’ve had sushi in Tijuana before). The miso soup should have been called a fish soup. The smell was unbearable. Tofu and seaweed was rank as well, I must say the green onions in the miso may have been the highlight of my meal. The chicken teriyaki had no flavor, I wish Gordon Ramsey could have been there to try it, dry and the smell again was unbearable. I’d take a California roll from Safeway any day over what they served me (and I’ve actually got food poisoning from Safeway sushi before so that pretty much says it all). I was so hungry I had no choice but to eat the chicken Katsu which again was a massive disappointment as it was chewy and had no flavor, had to lather it in the brown sauce. I left having spent $65 on lunch for me and wifey and spent 30 minutes on the toilet after my meal. They could give me a $100 gift card and I still wouldn’t go back. Avoid this place if you want...
