Condal Tapas Restaurant & Rooftop Lounge — Restaurant in San Juan

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. I was willing to be nice and not say anything about this place despite the treatment we received here but after coming back and seeing other horrible experiences here I thought I should share mine. We made a reservation for this place back in May when traveling to Puerto Rico because of the ambiance and the fact that there was a rooftop deck. We were the first guests to arrive. It took the server 20 minutes to first address us. We were served tap water that apparently costs money?! The menu was very overpriced for what they offered. My fiance ordered a diet coke that came out flat that he sent back. I ended up ordering croquettes and my Fiance ordered a grilled chicken breast with a side of mashed potatoes. It took an hour for our food to come out while others who were got there after were getting food before us. Not once did our server come to check on us, no refill for the water (fine with me since they apparently charge you for it!) You will see the image of his meal further back in these reviews. My croquettes came out fine but his chicken was just as disgusting as it looked. It was undercooked, literally pink in the middle and just gave it some grill marks to make it look edible. There was no seasoning and the mashed potatoes were just as bland and dry. He paid just about 30$ for a slab of undercooked chicken and a scoop of mashed potatoes! Who would be satisfied with that! We asked the waitress to return the meal because we weren't paying for that. She said she would get the manager for us. Well, the "manager" came out and asked ALL of the tables how their food was, except ours! Walked right past without even looking. We waited for this manager for another half hour. He was helping the staff serve tables and all so he had plenty of opportunity to talk to us. When we were done waiting we walked inside where he was to ask when the "manager" would speak to us and he said to our faces that the manager is busy...to our faces. That man was the manager and he lied about it. We were as nice as we could be about all of this because we know things happen. We asked for our receipt and asked for that nasty food to be comped and he gave us the receipt with the grilled chicken that we didn't eat and the diet coke that wasn't drank. I told him we are not paying for that and gave him money for my food but not for the other food and he was snappy with us and said that we are paying for our food and threatened to call the police on us for not paying! We ended up paying and disputed it with the bank because we did not want this to ruin our night anymore. I cannot, enough, reiterate how terrible this experience was. I have NEVER been treated like this from a restaurant. I worked in the business for some time so I understand when things go wrong but experiencing this was something I never want to go through again. Our group decided to visit this restaurant for our annual group vacation. The restaurant had pretty good reviews so we decided to give it a try. Upon arrival the lights were initially out because of a power glitch. So we decided to start wait approximately 30 minutes for the lights to return. When I arrived back to the restaurant with the lights on. Three other groups requested to be seated because our original reservations were delayed. The older woman at the manager at the front door was extremely abrasive and impolite as we all requested our table. Eventually she allowed us to eat at our discretion. (We decided to eat because of the local Covid restrictions. Many of the restaurants required reservations and the kitchens close at 10:00 pm).

As we were seated the second reservation, Frederick, arrived to sit with us. At that moment we were sat at a table for six, and we asked our waiter for two more seats. The request was made after two gentleman were removed from the restaurant because they wore shorts. Therefore we asked for those two chairs to be added to our table so we could be sat as a group. The manager came to the table and began arguing with myself and Frederick about our request for the two reservations to be sat together. She belittled us and made us feel unwelcomed for asking for two seats.

As a back story: Prior to our 9:00 pm reservation Frederick called the restaurant asking that both of the reservation were sat next to each other. The manager said that she would allow it. However when we got to the restaurant she denied the conversation then she said that Fredericks phone call was unclear. Never once did she apologize for her misunderstanding. After arguing for nearly 10 minutes she walked away with an attitude and a server came to the table with an additional chair.

Overall the food was wonderful. However the manager was disrespectful and currently we are being revictimized because the restaurant overcharged us. The manager called us numerous times arguing that we were incorrect and they add additional charges after patrons leave her establishment. This is disgraceful and tasteless. I hope that the restaurant learns from this experience, and I wish that no other customer has to experience this...

The good- nice view, valet offered, staff can communicate in English

The bad- service, food quality, bad value, takes a long time

Vacationing in Puerto Rico, this place had decent reviews so my group of 8 thought it would be a good choice based on that.

When I go to McDonald's I half expect my order to be wrong or the quality is questionable.

When I go to chick-fil-a, I expect to be greeted by very pleasant people and the food to be consistent.

Now that I've prefaced this review with my expectations of restaurants, we can proceed.

Condal has a nice atmosphere, different places to sit. Inside seating, rooftop seating etc.

I don't mind paying good money for food if it's good and the quality of service matches.

The food is subpar, but the service is even worst. They hand us waters while holding the cup by the rim, with how strict Puerto Rico is with COVID restrictions this seemed a little odd that they would place their fingers where I would place my lips 🤦. We ask for straws, 3 times. The waiter who first took our order was obviously annoyed with us asking if we can pay separately instead of everything on one bill.

They took a LONG time to get our food out to us.

The food lacked the depth of flavor that high end restaurants have. We should've just gone to Mario Pagán to eat. Looked better.
