My spouse and I pride ourselves on our burger knowledge. We've done reviews of more than 60 burger places in three countries and we continue to add to our expertise and knowledge.

We are also beef snobs. We come from beef country and we know the difference. When judging a burger, we place a lot of weight on the flavour of the beef itself. Not the sauces, not the condiments. The beef. Lots of places hide a poor burger under a "bourbon sauce" or a pile of bacon or onions. Those are fine things to have on a burger, but only if there's a decent patty underneath it all.

El Hamburguer is far better than it has any right to be. The meat is shaped more like a giant meatball than a patty and it comes on a bun with nothing on it but the cheese. It doesn't look like a winner at all.

But then you bite into it and realize that these people have found some very good beef, and they know how to prepare it. They've been doing it since 1962 and sure know their stuff.

Cooked over flame, it must be a challenge to keep a patty that shape from either drying out or getting charred. But they do it. The result is a truly juicy and tasty burger. The only flavour enhancers are the little basket of tomatoes, pickles and onions they give you on the side to top your burger with. That's all it needs.

On the wall is a banner celebrating four employees who have worked there for more than 30 years. That says a lot about the place.

Our only letdown was the sides (fries and rings) which are only slightly above average. Fortunately we didn't go there for the sides.

Prices are excellent - a real value.

We are tough judges. The highest score we've ever given to a burger is 9.5. El Hamburguer scores an excellent 8.5, putting it among the top ten burgers we've judged so far. They are in pretty elite company.

This was my First time to San Juan Im from Charlotte NC and they were rude we tried parking in the restaurant parking lot but the man at the front had it blocked off with cones he wouldn’t let us inside to park so we had to park somewhere else so we get out an as we approaching the restaurant we saw the man letting other people inside the parking spot but just told us that we couldn’t park inside he said he didn’t speak English but that’s not all when we got inside the restaurant the host Asks us how many people for the table it was 3 of us so we said “3”. She then leads us to the back of the restaurant didn’t shows us our table but just lead us to the back of the restaurant we sat ourselves down she didn’t give us no menu or asked if we needed drinks or anything so we sat down we waited for like 20 minutes no one came back to our table, didn’t bring any menu didn’t ask anything so we all felt the need to leave I would not recommend this restaurant to any tourists at all horrible customer service.
