Freddy's Frozen Custard & Steakburgers — Restaurant in San Marcos

Update, Saturday, February 11, 2023: For a year now, the roads leading to Freddy's have been mired by a maze of construction zones to get in and out of Freddy's. I stopped today on a Saturday evening at 6:34 pm for a meal as there was only 2 cars parked for dining in and as usual, the IH35 highway plus access roads are bogged down both directions at 20 mph. The stop was mostly to relax and destress from this awful traffic situation constantly going on in San Marcos. The restaurant manager was very friendly, helpful with my order at front counter and before ordering I scanned the rewards app and registered for rewards points. Immediately I received points for a free regular sized ice cream, which here at Freddy's they call it "concrete". The No. 1 original deluxe meal came with regular sized drink and their famous shoestring fries.

Everything was good except the shoestring fries. They were not freshly fried. They were cold, tough and overly salted. Last time the shoestring fries were of the best quality, fresh, hot and perfectly seasoned.

Otherwise, an improvement from last time so I moved this Freddy's location up from 3 stars to a 4.

Last year in 2022: It has been awhile since ordering from a Freddy's. The RR, TX one on 620 is great....SA, TX not good. So....I decided to give San Marcos a chance hoping to match the quality from RR, TX. I had the Patty Melt, Fries and medium drink. The fries were great, fresh & crispy. The medium drink was worth about 4 straw gulps since it was more ice than diet Dr. PEPPER.

The service was very courteous, & fast in the drive thru.

My biggest concern is how can you charge 10 dollars for wafer thin burger patty? It was so thin it crisped up around edges due to being so wafer thin. I felt like I got very oily bread with oily onions and cheese rather than beef on...

Stopped in for a quick burger and chili cheese fries for my elderly dad after he had fasted for a medical procedure and wanted a good, satisfying lunch.

Empty restaurant, no one to be seen as we waited at the counter. Poked my head into the kitchen area and finally saw someone and let her know we were there. She came to the counter and was curt and cold. Maybe because I dared to look for someone to place an order? Or we had disturbed her? She gave us an order number, despite that we were the only ones in the restaurant the whole time and when she called out the number, Dad went to see if it was ready but didn't see her or the food. We sat a long time before I went to investigate and saw that she had placed the tray down on the rear counter and we didn't know it was there. It sat getting cold as we sat hungry, wondering where the order was, despite us being the only customers there. She couldn't let us know it was ready when it was sitting there a while? We certainly didn't feel welcome.

Everything was cold, burger meat was overly greasy, too thin and seemed burnt. It seemed like it had been sitting out on the grill a while. Cold, hard fried but the chili wasn't terrible.

Will definitely be going to the In N Out Burger nearby next...

My husband and I recently decided to stop eating red meat, and probably the thing we miss most is a good burger. We decided to try the available veggie burgers in town, starting with Freddy's. The burger looks similar to their other steak burgers, other than a patty of lighter brown. The bread is toasted and the sauce is as good as always. I ordered mine as a lettuce wrap (no bun), which had all the same toppings. I wish the patty had been wrapped in a better lettuce than iceberg, such as butter lettuce, but it was refreshing nonetheless. The patty itself tastes like a black bean taco, which I enjoyed, but it isn't close to what a burger tastes like. My husband, who was really hoping for a great burger substitute, opted to take his patty off the burger and eat only the bun and toppings. Thus, if you're looking for that meaty burger texture and taste, this one probably won't quell your craving. However, if you're looking for a great tasting vegetarian burger, this one is a great option. Bonus points for good service this morning....
