After hearing so many things about how amazing Umami Sushi was, I find myself disappointed.

First things, the staff seems uncomfortable/untrained. I had to explain to my server what I was ordering from the menu, and of the two nigiri I ordered one was unavailable. There was also an issue with the table next to mine not receiving their order.

Second, the food. I was honestly excited when I saw my fatty salmon nigiri come out. It looked fantastic, but though the cut was generous, it couldn't make up for the lack of flavor in the rice. More than that, the wasabi is medium/low quality, and it was garnished with something I couldn't identify that was unpleasant.

I ordered a poke bowl (a personal favorite of mine) and found it mediocre. The ingredients were all high quality, but the ponzu sauce I ordered seemed to be absent. The overall flavor was very salty, and could've used something sweet to contrast. Also, using corn in a poke bowl is something I find a little strange.

The ingredients' high quality made the meal decent, but the mishandling of the ingredients and untrained staff tells me I won't be...

I don’t quite know where to begin. I moved to Central Texas by myself in 2019 and that was very difficult. There are two things that I truly enjoy in life.... well I enjoy a lot of things but the focus today is: Sushi and music. This place caters to both or them. The owner, DAVID has an amazing playlist that can turn any bad day into a great one, and he’s such a humble owner as well. You wouldn’t know he owns the place unless you truly talk and inquire with the staff. He’s always here when I’m here; and he makes amazing sushi. He’s attentive and awesome. All the sushi chefs are amazing. I have never been disappointed coming here. The wait staff are kind and friendly, and the aesthetic of this establishment is truly admirable. I’m sitting here now, as I have just ordered my 7th piece of delicious and fresh nigiri with Kanye West playing in the background. My taste buds and ear drums are quite excited. 😜 #1 sushi restaurant in all of central Texas. I said...

Food was good. In fact, i would say it was great. But definitely it was good. Service did come with a smile......HOWEVER..... The 2 star rating was for the staff. We arrived 50 minutes before closing and were greeted with a firm.....you do know we stop taking orders in 5 minutes. When we told our waitress it's still more than 45 minutes before closing, she told us the kitchen wouldn't take any more orders unless we ordered now. I am not going to say I won't return and give the service another chance.....but jeez yall. It's a Friday night....you're open until 10pm. I arrive at 909pm and you don't want to serve us. Just close at 9 if that's the case. Worth noting 3 other tables quickly got their to go boxes and left after they heard out interaction with the same waitress they had. Honestly....if we weren't starving.....I would have left thanks to the...

My 2 college kids insisted on going here for sushi, and I'm glad we did.. took the whole fam, and we were satisfied.. It happened to be HH, which allowed us to try a whole gang of stuff.. .majority of our orders were from the HH menu and a few from the regular menu.. The food was good, and our server was nice and attentive.. it was also early dinner time (530pm) and only 2 other customers were there.. There were 5 of us, and one thing that stood out was that even though we all ordered a bunch of things, they managed to make sure our plates only contained what each ordered for themselves.. there have been times that we've gotten random plates with random rolls/nigiri (elsewhere), so that was a plus!

While on a mini vacation in San Marcos, we chose Unami for dinner one night. It was an excellent choice. Our server, Nieues, was fantastic. Very attentive and helpful. We started with a mango sake and the Tokyo Tower. The sake was excellent, the Tokyo Tower was fantastic. It was fresh, so many wonderful flavors and just the right amount of spice with the honey Wasabi sauce. Next we ordered multiple rolls, with the volcano, shaggy dog, and Dr. Octopus being our favorites. Everything was fresh and extremely tasteful. The only downside, it looks like a lot the chairs cushions were worn and torn at the corners. We will definitely return on our next visit to San Marcos.
