ADDENDUM: The manager of the hotel personally contacted me within a few hours of the posting and was extremely apologetic and thoughtful and refunded the cost of the dinner. They're going to remove the tasting menu at the restaurant. The hotel and restaurant are apparently under new management. 🤞
Onto the dinner: Oy vey is all I can say.
Never have I had a tasting menu so poorly explained. I should not have chosen that option - that was squarely my fault—big mistake.
In aggregate, the meal was awful. Never have I had a more poorly paced coursing of dishes literally thrown onto the table. Tasting menus should not involve three dishes being delivered simultaneously -- this happened twice. All portions should be separated for all persons instead of combining all the portions onto one overcrowded plate. The server, and not a busser with an inadequate understanding of the menu, should be explaining each course.
On a positive note, food-wise, the hamachi was actually very good. So was the steak (despite no sauce and overly cooked garlic), but we were never asked how we wanted it cooked. The caesar was also good. I do want to say the greeting staff and hostesses were wonderful.
That is where the experience went south. The agnolotti was awful. The fish was tasteless except for a lousy aftertaste, and, as noted above, the portions were delivered on a single plate for all parties. The potatoes were drenched in salt, and the broccolini was haphazardly arranged. The Caprese salad's mozzarella quality was suboptimal, uninspired with tasteless tomatoes, and missing basil. Amazingly, they do not give you balsamic vinegar! When we asked for some, they put it in the world's smallest ramekin and then charged us $6 for two tablespoons! They justified it as being extremely expensive and "aged". Actually, it was runny and totally plain— literally Trader Joe's quality.
The dessert for the tasting menu and 150/pp was not good. Perplexingly, a single portion was delivered for all party members, but that was fine with me as it was a sickly-sweet marshmallow Neapolitan. We told them at the outset that it was our anniversary, and they did say "happy anniversary" as we left, but they couldn’t even be bothered putting a candle in the dessert. They clearly gave out the cheapest dessert option possible.
Ambience: The room is gorgeous, and the atmosphere is lovely. This ended with the live music where the pianist started to play, which was painful to listen to as it seemed that he had just started playing piano last week. Missed chords and torturous. Yikes.
Otherwise, the meal was, well, you know. We will never return to this restaurant as it was a horrible experience. Too bad, because the room itself is so great. It deserves its 3.8 rating. We were staying at the hotel and knew the room was amazing, and we went without looking at the Google...
Read moreII actually worked on the renovation of the restaurant. it looked amazing. but after actually sitting down and eating I have to say it was $900 I will never see again. $75 Corkage fee. It is supposed to be a steakhouse And steaks they have but extremely overpriced An average at best. it was an extreme overpriced disappointment. we purchased a bottle of wine at the restaurant which the wine prices are fair But our friends brought a bottle and they charged us $75 to open up a $50 bottle of wine And then we had to argue for 20 minutes to get it taken off the bill. It was my wife's birthday And the food is just average$200 a person You would think it would be beyond amazing. We only had the one bottle of wine that was $100 So it wasn't $900 for drinks it was $800 for so so food. They post all these pictures on the website on how amazing everything is But there are so many hidden charges it's very disappointing how they nickel and dime you for everything. You would think For a $100 steak, they would give you the side sauce for free But now they charge for literally everything including $12 for a piece of bread. There are so many great food options in Santa Monica That you would get twice the meal and half the price. The service was good the atmosphere was good the prices for an average meal were obscene. $900 For 4 people which did not include the tip. Since the waiter was good we obviously had to tip well So at the end of the night$1100 is a lot of money for an average dinner I could have bought a new iphone or a nice outfit for that kind of money. but if you have money to burn and don't care about the quality of the food This is the place for you. If you actually have to work hard for a living Didn't care about how you spend your money and what you get I would personally...
Read moreI recently dined at what I expected to be a high-end steak restaurant for my husband's birthday, but the experience fell far short of expectations. The evening started off poorly when the restaurant opened late, causing us to wait for our reservation.
Things took a turn for the worse after the server presented us with dessert menus. As we discussed options, another staff member—presumably a manager—approached and asked us to leave. This abrupt request was particularly disheartening given that it was a special occasion for my husband. Feeling humiliated and disrespected, my husband just wanted to get out of there and plunked down his credit card.
Though our server did attempt to make amends by comping our drinks, the damage was done. I would have preferred to have paid full price for a genuinely enjoyable evening rather than have my husband's birthday spoiled. The situation could have been managed much better; the manager could have offered us alternative seating at the empty bar seats instead of asking us to leave abruptly.
Overall, the experience was deeply disappointing. The lack of consideration for our special occasion and the poor handling of the situation left us with a sour taste. I won’t be returning, and I wouldn’t recommend this place if you're looking for a memorable and pleasant...
