What a wonderful little bakery right in the heart of downtown Sarasota! I had never heard of a Chimney Cake until I tried one here. Searching Google for bakeries near me with my boyfriend one Saturday afternoon, this lovely little shop popped up.
Everything about this place is superb. The adorably sweet girl behind the counter, Aurora, was not only attentive, but she was incredibly knowledgeable. From the history of the Chimney Cakes and how the bakery came to Sarasota, to how they are made. Fresh Fresh Fresh seems to be the motto here. The crisp, clean simple decor with lovely furnishing were so inviting. They even have a liquor license, which I think would make this a great spot for happy hour!
Sweet, Savory or Spicy, Dessert or Sandwich, there is a chimney cake for everyone. We decided on sweet, and both of us chose a cinnamon chimney cake filled with ice cream. They had me at cinnamon. Throw a marshmallow in the bottom (as it’s a hollow tube of scrumptious cinnamon covered dough), fill it with locally made soft serve vanilla ice cream and I’m in heaven.
I can’t wait to try a sandwich from them, especially because I am not big on the bread overpowering my sandwich. I’m thinking the savory Everything Bagel Chimney Cake filled with Homemade Chicken Salad is in my near future! Follow me on @packedandwandering to see my...
Read moreMy family was downtown Sarasota and looking for a quick bite to eat. We popped into Kurtos and were blown away. The owners were friendly, greeted us instantly, and gave us the rundown of what they have to offer as a Hungarian bakery. All 3 of us got sandwiches and we all agreed they were hands down the best sandwiches we’d ever had. The bread is UNREAL. They bake it fresh in a tube shape, so it’s thin and crispy on the outside, but soft on the inside, and they cut it in half and you eat it like a 6 inch sub. All sandwiches should be on their bread - it was perfect, and left lots of room for a generous portion of delicious and fresh sandwich filling inside. Although we were too stuffed to try it, they make sweet versions of this bread as well, and fill it with ice cream. I can’t wait to try that next time! It’s clear the owners take a lot of pride in what they do and they should be proud, what a gem of a business...
Read moreWe were in Sarasota for a long weekend for a wedding and stumbled upon Kurtos on our first day here, and it was all we could think and talk about all weekend!! We came back twice during our trip and I wish we could go back 100 more times before we head home in order to try every single sandwich on the menu. The Italian was phenomenal - fresh and flavorful. The La Vita e Bella was even better! But I think the Hungarian was my absolute favorite with such a unique combo of flavors you won’t find anywhere else. We also sampled the vanilla-watermelon swirl ice cream which led to having to get a chimney cone to go with it. To top it all off, the owner of Kurtos was such a delight. She was so thrilled to see us through the weekend and chatted to us each time we visited like we were all old friends. I am just devastated to be leaving Sarasota and Kurtos to head home, but will definitely make...
