Thankfully the allies prevailed in WWII but I wish everybody's valor, effort, and awful sacrifice had put an end to all war. My three stars however are for changing, in the statue, a revealing feature depicted in the original photo: the woman's left hand and arm in the statue (calm) vs. in the photo (tense). No sculptors worth their salt would make that change accidentally. Search on the NY POST for a synopsis of the true story behind the sailor and nurse (actually a dental assistant) smooch (June 17, 2012 issue). Because the woman was not into being suddenly grabbed and "kissed" by the (alcohol-smelling) sailor at all, she later reported. The 2012 book detailing the history of the iconic photo is "The Kissing Sailor: The Mystery Behind the Photo that Ended World War II". I can only imagine what an amazing moment it was when unconditional surrender was announced. But today, let's both appreciate what this photo has meant to the American public through the years, and accept the truth that has belatedly been learned about what was really going on for the woman involved. It's not either/or, but let's not...

It’s super walkable, felt very safe, and there’s no shortage of hidden gems to stumble upon, from cozy cafés to unique little shops.
Sure, it’s hotter than Hades in the summer — but let’s be real, that’s Florida for you. Grab a cold drink, stroll the palm-lined streets, and soak up the good vibes. The sunsets? Absolutely unreal. The community? Friendly and welcoming. It’s one of those rare spots that somehow combines art, nature, food, and fun — all wrapped up with a salty sea breeze.
Highly recommend — whether you're planning a day trip or staying awhile, Downtown Sarasota is pure Florida charm with a little something...
Read moreMagnificent Statue! Honored I was able to stand amongst this 25-foot "Unconditional Surrender" statue that stands near Bayfront Park in downtown Sarasota. This iconic statue in Sarasota must be moved to make way for construction soon and there are strong opinions on whether it should return to its prominent location once the project is finished. I wanted to stand in its graces while I had the chance. The statue of a sailor kissing a nurse is based on a famous Alfred Eisenstaedt photograph taken in New York's Times Square on Aug. 14, 1945, ‘V-J Day’, marking the end of World War II. The sculpture needs to be moved for the construction of a new traffic roundabout. It’s now up to the Sarasota City Commission to make a final decision on where ‘Unconditional Surrender’ will ultimately reside. I highly recommend a visit while you still...
