We were seated promptly at the table we had requested in our reservation. Service was friendly and proficient, accommodating our desire for a relaxed pace and split portions.
One of my primary motivations for trying this restaurant was the range of their menu. Adventurous diners may choose from a selection of items not commonly offered, but there are also plenty of items targeted to diners who prefer more familiar fare.
We started with the white fish pate which, for us, was the WOW of the evening. A rectangular base of what I thought was something akin to a rye or pumpernickel bread topped by a creamy, fluffy paste of mild white fish. It was accompanied by mustard seeds, finely chopped cornichons and some kind of a sauce to lend a bit of "zing" to the dish. The base was described in the menu as potato rosti, which I would have expected to recognize (having lived in Switzerland), but it combined perfectly with everything to create a taste experience unlike any that we have previously enjoyed.
Our second course was their homemade pasta with a Bolognese sauce. It was exactly as it should be. The sauce was close to a traditional Bolognese (i.e. heavy on meat, light on tomato), it was topped with quality Parmesan and the pasta was al dente.
The final course was scallops, sautéed to perfection. The additions of mushrooms and tarragon added a refreshing twist to pique the palate.
The restaurant manager also acts as sommelier. She was very familiar with their wine list, which offers an extensive selection of both familiar and unfamiliar labels. There was even a varietal that I had not heard of. She made several suggestions, based upon our menu selections and preferences. These proved to be spot on. Prices were fair, sometimes good value (i.e. less than the customary 3x).
The list of after dinner drinks is ample; we chose an Italian grappa that was excellent.
Bottom line: we left very satisfied and plan to return. Highly...
Read moreMy wife and I enjoyed a delicious meal at Local 1110 in late November. We were running late and a bit rushed and had no reservations anywhere. We had dined at Local numerous times in the past and hoped there might be something available. To our delight we hurried in and found two seats at the bar.
We were warmly greeted by two skilled cocktail masters who were both knowledgeable and engaging. They each made a few recommendations on the wine and the menu possibilities which we considered. We felt no pressure to order quickly or to move along. We knew we were in the right place.
My bride enjoyed her vegetarian blue barley bowl while I had the roasted squash with pomegranate side dish with the small plate of house made garganelli with bolognese sauce. These were recommended by the bartenders. I had only one regret: that I had ordered the small plate of garganelli. I could easily have enjoyed a full plate. The bolognese was not over cooked, or overblown with tomato flavor. It was balanced, enhancing the perfectly cooked pasta. The squash was amazing. I’d never tasted such a combination before that evening. I paired the meal with an Italian blend.
The bar servers knew well both the menu and the wine list.
Tess, the General Manager has engaged a skilled and informed team at Local 1110. It is a pleasure to go to a restaurant where we can enjoy not only well prepared entrees but to have them served by professional staff. I would also add that it is a pleasure, increasingly rare, to be able to delight in both the meal and the service in an environment where we could have a conversation. The ambience was engaging yet wonderfully serene: music was not blaring, the lighting was quiet, and the noise level, well, was non-existent.
Our compliments to the chef, the service, and to the manager for making Local 1110 one of our favorite...
Read moreMy husband and mother-in-law and I were visiting Savannah this past weekend and had a late reservation. I moved up our reservation time the day we got there but thought we'd have to settle for a high top. Long story short, we had to rearrange a lot of plans for that trip and while a crowded high top wasn't what we had in mind, we preferred that over eating super late. But when we got there we were very surprised and happy that the hostess had arranged a much better, more cozy and private table after all. We very much appreciated that.
Most of the food was amazing. The fried green tomatoes with smoked trout roe were very different and good, as were the mussels which were in a delicious broth we all shared like soup after the mussels were gone. The house made focaccia was amazing and we asked for extra.
The only disappointments were how long the cocktails and then entrees all took to arrive, and also the grouper I ordered. The other elements of the dish were good but the fish itself was a bit overcooked and also just not very tasty. I couldn't put my finger on it but, apart from being overcooked, I just didn't think it was quite as fresh as it could have been. If it wasn't so late and if we hadn't waited so long for the entrees I might have sent it back. But everything else was good enough, it was late enough and I was full enough that it didn't seem worth it. But it was still disappointing.
I had a bite of my husband's lamb and, while he liked it, I thought it was a bit gamy and not that great. I also didn't think my MIL's steak was that good, the piece I tried was very fatty and gristly. But maybe I'm pickier. Overall it was a nice experience but the food was...
