Man... This is tough. I was stoked. Love portillo's and welcome all my people from Chicago to sunny Arizona with open arms, but this is a miss for me all the way. We got the classic deep, the salad, 8 wings, and cheese thin for the kids. This is a mountain of food. We will have leftovers for a month+. It was $92 out the door which is ridiculous for pizza, but it's a lot of food...
We did takeout, ordered from the website and had about a 10 minute wait from the suggested time on the website. The dining area inside was pretty slow.
The dough on the thin is either missing or really low on salt. It's hard to eat the edge it's so crispy. The kids liked the pizza but wouldn't (couldn't) eat the crust due to missing teeth it's so crispy. The adults gave it a go and didn't enjoy the crust.
The classic deep dish is just heavy, crispy and doughy, wet from the tomatoes... Not my thing. It's incredibly tomato forward so if you're not in to tomatoes, you won't like it. It sits in your stomach and sticks to your ribs. The cheese they use is amazing.
The wings are like dominoes wings. They seem boiled and mushy. The sauce is good and right on the heat scale. The ranch is wonderful for a dip. For the value and count, not worth it. I definitely wouldn't come here for just wings, which I do at a lot of other pizza spots.
The salad is really good. Fresh and light and the dressing is good.
All in all, it feels like a half fast food, half fine dining establishment, which is odd... Pushing the app everywhere you look is off-putting and made me think McDonald's or Starbucks. It has a clean aesthetic inside and feels clean, but over the top on the mass-chain thing. Pair that with the lack of value, I think I'm sticking with the local pizza chains and save this for some special occasion I can't imagine. Kind of a disappointment from...
Read moreFor a bleak period of 8 years, I lived in Milwaukee. I'd sometimes drive down to Chicago. During many of those trips, I'd go to Lou Malnati's with friends. We'd each order a large pizza and take the leftovers back to Milwaukee. I was so excited when the first Lou Malnati's opened in Phoenix because I could come to it when I visited family. I quickly brought my family and introduced them to this Chicago deep dish (they had had others in Chicago). It was a hit! I will still buy a large pizza and take the leftovers home (the one pizza where I like leftovers). I just moved to Phoenix, so I no longer have to order the pizza to be shipped from Chicago on dry ice (although the dry ice shipments were awesome). You can also buy the frozen pizzas in the restaurants, so I had done that to take back to Albuquerque with me when I drove back a few times.
My favorite pizza is the spinach pizza; and I'll get the butter crust, extra cheese, and roma tomatoes. I think the cheese pizza is very plain (I love most cheese pizzas, but this one is only ok). The Caesar salad is great. It does come with tomatoes which traditional Caesar salads do not, but I love tomatoes, so I'll take it. I just noticed "cheese cubes" on the menu. They are actually fried cheese curds a staple from Wisconsin served with ranch or marinara. I'm going to have to try these next time!
This is a great restaurant, and I'm happy to have access to it here in AZ. It's much nicer in the restaurant than buying the frozen pizzas and making...
Read moreWe arrived on a Sunday afternoon around 2:30 PM. As soon as we walked up to the front door, a staff member greeted us. She promptly guided us to an indoor table which was perfectly cleaned and comfortable. The restaurant had a very "Industrial" feel as far as the decor ambiance. It was open and airy with plenty of natural light. Service was prompt and drinks were immediately served. I have to say we received excellent service and always with a smile (it was exuded even from behind the mask...Lol)...especially from our top class server who's name is Chelsea!
We decided to try the Lemon Pepper Wings. I have to say that they were the best chicken wings I have EVER had in a restaurant! Crispy on the outside and moist and juicy on the inside served with Gorgonzola or Ranch Dressing. Chelsea stated that ALL their wings tased just as good. We are sure to head back for another trip to try all the other wing flavors.
I ordered the "Classic" individual deep dish pizza and my friend ordered the vegetable deep dish pizza. Both were excellent! It takes a little while for them to make these pizzas but they are worth the wait as they came out piping hot.
We then proceeded to order the pizza cookie for desert which didn't disappoint at all and melted in our mouths.
This is s a must stop pizza/wing place if you are ever...
