Blue Star Cafe & Pub in Wallingford is one of our go-to brunch spots in Seattle! 🌟 (make sure you get the breakfast potatoes!) Great for families, weekend hangs and don’t miss Monday Trivia Nights. Have you been? #BlueStar #Seattle #breakfast #brunch #trivia #SeattleRefined #PNW

Blue Star Cafe & Pub is one of my old-reliable American breakfast spots in Seattle. I’m picky about breakfast food. If I had to pick a final meal it would be a good ol’ American breakfast. I’ve been to Blue Star many times and I’ve never been disappointed. The scrambles and omelets are great and are a nice big portion. You can’t go wrong when picking an egg dish, they’re all going to be good eggs. The Very Berry pancakes were a fantastic choice—they weren’t greasy, too thick, or too sweet. I think their french toast is also good, but I haven’t tried it. My expert recommendation is to switch out the toast for a biscuit or scone, you won’t regret it. Also the breakfast potatoes are can’t miss, some of the best in Seattle. As for the Bloody Mary’s—eh. Hate to say it, but I was expecting more. Don’t get me wrong, I order one every time, but it’s only because Seattle is lacking on the Bloody Mary scene and they’re my favorite drink. I find Blue Star’s lack depth and are a little too thin. I’ve tried the specialty ones and they’re better than the original. Nevertheless, if you’re hungover, need a place to meet your boyfriend’s dad, or are craving something that’ll make you proud to live in the US of A, Blue Star is a five star place to dine!

TL;DR: Blue Star is a solid middle of the road diner. Blue Star is a bit of a roller coaster. Some food is great, some food is terrible. Some servers are great, some should avoid food service jobs. The place can be ridiculously cramped on a busy day, there's no seating for large groups, and no reservations are allowed. With a lack of parking and inconsistent food quality it's tough to love Blue Star. On the upside, the portions of most diner specialties are large and well-made. Usually. Quality is inconsistent, though, and the same dish can come out poorly prepared for one person at the table but fine for someone else. Certain kitchen choices like raisins in the cinnamon rolls or low quality chunk salmon on the Benedicts have made friends and I question the taste level of the chefs. (YMMV, but our table's collective response was "ugh.") It's a cramped, busy diner. Pretty classic Americana at its core, with large portions and average prices for a city restaurant.

I have enjoyed many breakfasts at Blue Star over the years. But I have noticed differences occurring over the last couple of years--shortcuts, if you will--which have lessened the enjoyment. My favorite meal has been the Norwegian Combo; crepes with eggs & meat of choice. When freshly made, the crepes are tender and very delightful. But, according to a server some time ago, they are now routinely (not just when busy) made up in advance (not sure how far) and then reheated as needed. The reheating method feels like microwaving simply because the texture becomes quite rubbery. But I suppose that could also come from reheating on the flattop as well...overcooking is overcooking. Either way, the crepes are no longer tender and delightful. The bacon used to be quite a supple treat, but now is paperthin and feels like the pre-cooked kind that can be reheated either in the microwave or on the flattop. There is no longer any tooth to this bacon at all. The fact that the entire plate of food, except for the still foamy bacon, was barely room temp tells me there are execution issues in the kitchen. I'm not sure why--we were one of only two occupied tables in the entire restaurant in the middle of the afternoon. Lastly, service was spotty, perhaps due to the kitchen's execution issues. Instead of sitting under a heat lamp, toast was delivered a good 5 minutes ahead of the meal--to just sit and get cold. To the server's credit, it was graciously replaced upon request. Of particular note, some of the above issues do actually predate the pandemic but, sadly, are still around, and others have appeared only recently. Blue Star is an awesome restaurant, and I very much want to keep it on my go-to list, but its quality and execution issues would...

We had a group of 7 on a Tuesday night, and the place was basically empty. However, our service was still very slow and at one point we were asked to give up our menus so that another group could have them. (Do they only have 8 menus??)

I'm vegan and clarified with the server that the pistachio pasta could be made vegan, as it was marked that way on the online menu but not the paper menu. They assured me yes, it could be made vegan. When we ordered, I asked for the pistachio pasta made vegan. When it arrived, it had cheese on it. The service was already slow and I didn't want to cause a scene (and I'm not allergic to cheese or anything), so I just ate it. And it wasn't eve good. It was lukewarm with globs of melted shaved Parmesan that had re-coagulated. It wasn't very much food, but it was priced at $17. Really truly not worth it. Like, a waste of money.

One of my friends ordered the fish tacos and they didn't come out with everyone else's food. The server said "it'll be 2 minutes" but it was literally at least 15 minutes later when he got his food, everyone else was almost done eating.

The rest of my non-vegan friends said the food was basically fine. Seems like mediocre food quality for a pretty steep price and the service is very lacking.

I will not be back.

Also this Yelp page says that they require masks and the staff wears masks—that is not true. The staff was not wearing masks (maybe one person) and they did not require patrons...

I was super excited to try this place, so much so i told them it was my 1st time here. Headed straight to the ladies room, cute cozy & clean. Back to our seat and admiring he unique decor. Mind you this place at 8am was pretty empty and thought great we can order and be in & out. Shorty after they sat another person literally next to us..my 1st impression was ok really, you could have seated literally the next tabel behind or in front anywhere as it was just 2 people in our section. They took longer than needed to take our order. 1 coffee & a huge cinnamon roll to share. Was totally expecting a soft moist one..um absolutely NOT, I dug straight for the middle, - hard! I was very nice but I had to say something. I took it to the front & said exactly this... I'm sorry but this was not what I expected and I do not want it. Curious if this was yesterday cinnamon roll? She said probably. Ummm...I will pay for my coffee - (which I took 2 sips of) or are we good? She came back with my $4.69 black cup of coffee receipt, gladly paid it BUT in the customer service field that I am I would have comp that coffee,.apologized, offered to make a fresh cinnamon roll which I would have declined but the offer should have been made. And I would have spared the review, for doing the right...
