I’ve been here several times over the years and each time I find the food to be consistent. But not in a good way.
There’s nothing unpleasant about the food but it’s just … bland. Mexican flavors are so often delicious but Gorditos doesn’t bring them out well. Nothing pops. I’m not sure if it’s a lack of salt or seasoning but either way it’s just fairly disappointing each time.
My comments above are for the burrito, wet burrito and grande burrito. I’ve never ordered non-burritos but I’d be surprised if the quality was substantially different. Today I had the wet regular burrito with steak.
The chips/salsa side is also disappointing. They have the chips sealed in a plastic bag when you order them and the portion size is way bigger than I expected (the regular burrito is huge too so maybe I shouldn’t be surprised). But man these chips also lack so much flavor. Grocery store chips are tastier than these. These are hard and don’t pair very well with the sauces. Thankfully there’s not much desire to finish the bag.
I’m glad that there’s indoor seating again. During COVID it was understandably takeout only. There are 6-8 picnic style bench tables across two floors.
I tried a few of the sauces / salsas that they had and didn’t care for any of them too much.
Finally one detail that I feel a bit silly mentioning in a review but I’ll include anyways is the plastic forks and knives are so flimsy and small and aren’t really that adequate given the size of the wet burrito (not even the grande).
I appreciate it’s a restaurant that’s been around for decades and I like to support local businesses but comparing it to other Mexican options around Seattle or the US or the world (whether burrito focused or not or whether chain or independent) it’s just not deserving of 4.8 stars in my opinion.
If you decide to go then I hope you like it more than I do. I’ll happily agree...
Read moreThe people at Gorditos are truly great and their food is always the best. Never wavering and throughout the years we know, that we can always expect the food and service to be exceptional. We've NEVER had a bad meal there and that's an exception even with other places we love to eat at. Have to mention this....but Gorditos has a burrito called The Burrito Grande, they call it "the baby burrito". Its so big, its bigger than quite a few newborns..on their walls in the front, they have dozens of pictures with newborns laying side by side with this burrito...it IS quite a burrito...and we are such fans if this restaurant, that my wife and I are always a little sad (we're ok, seriously), but we always wish we had an opportunity to take those photos with our 9 and 3 year old when they were born, but it just didn't work out, circumstances were complicated and by the time we could, they were too big for the "baby and baby" photo. We may be disappointed with that fact, but you have to try their food, you won't be disappointed. Best burrito in the city, not even mentioning all the other items on the menu, which are...
Read moreEDIT: I’ve tried this place again and they surpassed my previously low expectations. Granted, I got a burrito where the ingredients are absolutely smothered with a chipotle sauce... but it was tasty! The prices are pretty good overall, and the burrito came out pretty big. I would say you could get a better Mexican meal at 5+ places surrounding this - but they have good options and both my partner’s and my dishes were fairly flavorful. Updated the review to 4 stars from 3.
This place leaves me wanting so much more. The staff were friendly, the space is clean enough, and they have a decent salsa bar... But there was little flavor to speak of. I'm not sure why everyone rates this so highly, it just makes me think that they haven't had truly great Mexican food before.
The salsa was the only saving grace on the flavor side, and even then I was severely disappointed. Due to the high number of good reviews, I will try one or two more things in the future to make a better assessment. As far as I'm concerned, this and Tacos Guyamos will forever remain the most overrated Mexican places in...
