Both the Seattle Times and the New York Times lauded this place as one of the best bakeries in the nation. I can only assume that the reporters never visited the site or, if they did, they do not understand what a bakery is.
Upon entry one is directly in front of the order position/ bakery case. The bakery case is all of 30” wide. I have seen bigger cases in convenience stores. We arrived at 1pm and all that was left were a few cookies. I get that maybe the excellence of their product means that they sell out quickly. However with the tiny display case, it takes only about four students to empty it within minutes. Even then the size of the case tells you that variety of products on offer would be scant. One also may be led to believe that with the word. ” bread” in their name that they would actually have bread on offer. But no, the only bread in the building is what is delivered with their sandwiches and toast. And then it is limited to a bun that is made on site and some bread that makes no mention of origin. I ordered the hamburger and fries. The fries were excellent; hot crisp and perfectly seasoned. The burger was hot and fresh but sabotaged by a patty that was as thin as one from McDonalds. Yes it tasted good but the meat was such a minor player in the sandwich that one had to adopt a different frame of reference to judge it. Judging it as a burger it falls short. Judging it as a hot sandwich with a meat garnish makes a better argument. My partner pronounces her breakfast sandwich good. She ordered it with bacon and was happy. The bun was the same Hawaiian bun as with the burger. Interestingly the bun, while nice, was far more similar to a brioche bun than any Hawaiian bun I am familiar with.
Seating is all outdoors which is a consequence of a small building. One side does have heaters and plastic curtains to shield diners. The other side has neither.
The people are very nice and service was fast. Pricing was very reasonable but the cost containment efforts were noted in the thinness of the burger patty.
This is a decent and affordable place for lunch but to call it a bakery is stretching the truth to nearly the point...
Read moreThe vibes at Saint Bread is fun, and it’s located next to Lake Union with plenty of seating, making for a chill and relaxing morning. I went here on a Sunday at 10 AM, right before a massive line formed. Everything was still in stock by the time I made it to the front, and I probably waited for only 10 minutes. Saint Bread has been featured on Infatuation at least 7 times and Eater a handful of times and I had heard a lot of things about them, so I had high hopes.
Let’s start with the good things. The space and decor is beautiful and the motif and design of Saint Bread is very interesting. They frequently have pop-ups, collaborate with local businesses, or host fundraisers to support local communities or important causes.
As for the food, well, sadly, I think their food has a lot of potential but everything I tried was just okay. Cinnamon-Okinawan Sugar Toast: This was probably the best thing I had, but I grew up eating something similar. They are a little too generous with both the sugar and cinnamon topping, and it was dry. Fried Egg Sandwich: This seems to be their most popular item, but they suffer from the same problem as Five Guys. The sandwich is wrapped in aluminum foil, which ends up steaming the bread and making it soggy. You can also see this on many of the photos posted of the fried egg sandwich. Gochudoodle Cookie: This is a pretty trendy fusion item right now, so I’ve had a really good version of this before. I didn’t really enjoy the one here as it also was too dry for me. Coffee: I saw everyone getting an iced coffee, so I got one too, but they just poured it from a jug. The coffee was also over extracted and acidic, not pleasant to drink.
They have great ideas and creativity, but the execution is...
Read moreFinally made it over to this place and was not disappointed at all! Went on a rainy Sunday around 10am, was a decent line but moved relatively fast. You do have to wait outside in line so dress accordingly! Lots of cute dogs and tiny humans to keep you entertained though.
Loved the location and vibe of this place. All outdoor seating - two areas, both covered and somewhat enclosed, one more than the other & that one had overhead heaters which made it super cozy! Easy to find a seat.
Coffee came out right away & was very good, just got a couple drip coffees so nothing fancy but roast was great, I believe they use Proud Mary coffee. I also ordered a chocolate chip cookie while we waiting for our food (which they handed to me right away), it was definitely one of the best cookies I've ever had! Was the perfect choco chip cookie for my personal taste (chewy, gooey, salty, nutty).
Food took 5-10 minutes to come out. We ordered the okonomiyaki style tortilla (GF) , the fried egg sando on a melonpan w/ thai turkey sausage, seasoned fries, and some miso ranch. The tortilla thing was super fun, never had something like it before, almost looked like a frittata covered in this sweet korean bbq-esque sauce & kewpie mayo. The egg sando was yummy, not the best I've ever had but the sausage was delicious. I would have liked some greens on there or something crunchy for more texture. Fries were 10/10 - crispy, potato-y, salty. Ranch was some of the best I've had - couldn't taste the miso but I definitely think it added an umami flavor I loved.
Will for sure be...
