So living on 45th, and occasionally walking by the smell of delicious food from this establishment, I decided it was finally time to try it. Well, sadly..my visit to TNT Taqueria left much to be desired, and unfortunately, I cannot give it more than one star. The experience was marred by bland and tasteless Mexican food that failed to live up to its enticing aroma. From the ordering process to the atmosphere, this establishment fell short in various aspects, leaving me with a feeling of disappointment.
First and foremost, the food at TNT Taqueria lacked the vibrant and authentic flavors that one would expect from Mexican cuisine. It was an unfortunate letdown as the dishes were devoid of the bold spices, rich seasonings, and traditional ingredients that make Mexican food so enticing. The flavors were insipid and left me longing for the genuine taste that should accompany Mexican dishes.
The ordering process at TNT Taqueria added to the overall disappointment. With only a small window outside to place your order and interact with a single person, the limited interaction and lack of customer service left much to be desired. It felt impersonal and rushed, taking away from the overall dining experience.
Moving on to the interior, the cleanliness of the establishment left a lot to be desired. The lack of cleanliness and tidiness was evident, and it detracted from the overall atmosphere. Additionally, the limited seating availability made it challenging to find a comfortable place to enjoy the meal. The lack of adequate seating options further diminished the dining experience.
The most disheartening aspect of my visit to TNT Taqueria was the feeling of lifelessness that permeated the food. The dishes lacked the depth and vibrancy that are synonymous with authentic Mexican cuisine. It seemed as if the flavors were diluted and watered down, leaving a disconcerting impression that the food was a poor imitation of what true Mexican cuisine should be.
Despite the disappointment in the culinary offerings, it is worth noting that the tantalizing aroma that greeted me upon entering the establishment was the only redeeming quality. Unfortunately, the scent did not translate into the taste and quality of the food, leaving me thoroughly unsatisfied.
In conclusion, my experience at TNT Taqueria was a letdown. The lackluster flavors, unremarkable ordering process, unclean interior, and limited seating options all contributed to a disappointing visit. The food failed to capture the essence of authentic Mexican cuisine, leaving me longing for a more fulfilling dining experience elsewhere. With a heavy heart, I cannot recommend TNT Taqueria for those seeking a true and enjoyable Mexican...
Read moreThe first time I ate here was almost exactly a year ago. I tried the torta and it was delicious. Fast forward to today - I had forgotten about this place and my brothers asked me if I wanted to go with them. I figured why not, since the first time was great. This time I was in the mood for a burrito and a taco so I ordered the green chile braised chicken burrito and a carne asada taco. I also ordered an horchata and the three of us split a churro. The burrito was filled with 70% pinto beans, which were chalky in texture and tasted very bland, 20% pico de gallo, which was OK, and the rest was chicken, rice, and cheese. The chicken had almost no green chile flavor and just did not have much flavor at all. My biggest gripe was that each bite was almost all beans and I could not taste anything else. I’m usually pretty forgiving when it comes to restaurants skimping on meats and loading up with beans and rice, but this was just ridiculous.
The taco was not much better, if at all. The double tortillas they used were very obviously microwaved and not heated up on a grill or comal. I’m Mexican-Guatemalan and when I go to my parents place for dinner my mom sometimes microwaves tortillas for tacos when she’s in a pinch, and they were exactly the same: sticky, chewy, and lacking that slight burnt flavor (sorry mamá, I still love you and your amazing food!). The carne asada had almost no flavor and the salsa verde I put on my taco to give it some oomph lacked taste and was cold (salsa should be warm or room temperature when served).
The horchata tasted great and the churro was one of the best I’ve had. Still, that did not make up for the truly below average food. I’ve had a lot of average Mexican food but this was so disappointing that it prompted me to write this review in hopes they improve their food in the future.
I was going to give TNT Taqueria a one star, but my brother convinced me to bump it up to two stars. His reasoning: “at least you didn’t find a hair or band-aid in your food”. He has a point, but at the same time, not finding a hair or band-aid in your food is a very low bar, one that TNT Taqueria just barely passed.
If you want great burritos and tacos, there is a Salvadoran place in the U-District called Guanacos Tacos. They also have...
Read moreHas gone downhill! In comparison to what they used to be (several years ago) these burritos are now just mediocre. We still come here a few times per month, usually because we waited too long to eat, but almost always regret it afterwards.
The burritos seem to be a lot smaller than they used to be, are now mostly beans and rice. The kale and sweet potato burrito, once overflowing with deliciously seasoned vegetables, is now a beige bean and rice embarrassment. Salsa, guacamole and churros are still as good as we remember, but the mostly-filler burrito factor is a big minus.
If you find yourself here, we recommend the breakfast burrito - lots of fluffy eggs. The Tortas have managed to retain a respectable meat portion, though the buns may be gradually shrinking as well.
The seating is kind of awkward, inside seating fills up pretty quickly and if you are outside at the tables you are bumping elbows with the people in line. If you are waiting for a to-go order, there's usually an awkward period of time where the staff person goes searching for you through the crowd of those waiting. For me, this is a little extra awkward because they use the name on my card rather than the name that I go by, wish they would ask for a name rather than assume.
Bottom line is: if you are looking for a good burrito, you would have loved this...
