UPDATE FOR THE UPDATE: My husband and I are officially sick merely a couple of hours after eating there. UPDATE: 6 whole years later! We gave Ranchito another try bc it moved locations. We had hoped they would get their act together. We Hi sealy have no idea how they are still in business.
Nope. Food was not good and as I look at my old review from 6 years ago.. (that i completely forgot about as i came to write a fresh and new review) nothing really changed even though the location did. This time I got to listen for 20 minutes during our meal as the now female owner of the restaurant stood and droned on and on to customers at the table next to us about "haters in the comments" and how "it's been slow lately but that ok were putting in a patio area!" She gossiped so much I knew who she was and her whole business because she would not shut up about her personal and business life. She didn't take any responsibility for the failures I heard her talk about... it was always just other people's fault. She seemed... oblivious. Like lady... listen to some criticism. We are locals! I heard her say reviews were only coming from people that don't even live here or disgruntled employees. That's such a lie!
The waiter was a young man and he was AMAZING! His customer service was the gold standard. They better be paying him well.
I think this place is only still running because of senior/older customers that loved the place from back in the day and their taste buds fell off bc the food just isn't good at all. They are coming out of habit at this point.
To the lady owner... I know you're reading this because you blabbering about how you read these comments.
Today it was all YOUR fault that your customers felt completely uncomfortable while trying to have their meal in peace. Can't blame anyone else but you for that. -------------Original Review------------------- The waiter mumbled a lot and i could barely hear my order and it wasnt even crowded. He seemed like he was just tired of being there. Poor guy seemed done with it all. Turns out he wasnt just the waiter he was the owner of the place. He seemed nice enough. The staff was nice. No problem with the service. However the food was awful, unfortunately. We order a "chile con queso" and it was just melted cheese with nothing else. No flecks of spice or anything let alone "chile". The salsa was digusting. Like someone threw an old tomato in a blender and poured it in a cup. Watery and flavorless. The chips tasted like they need to change the fryer oil. They were soaked in grease and smelled bad.
The enchiladas werent very good (thick rubbery corn tortillas and over salty enchilada sauce) the tacos pulled pork meat was dry and flavorless and the flour tortilla was stale and and hardened.
Again.. Service was courteous the food was just terrible. Id definitely come back if they sort the food out. They seem like...
Read moreAbsolutely awful experience, there's absolutely nothing good or authentic with the food here. Atmosphere is like dining in a giant cave, they don't have a liquor license (some on here said it was revoked?!), and the food was absolutely abysmal.
I was forced to eat here for a family event, and I can say without a doubt it's just as (if not more) overpriced and disgusting as it was before it closed years back.
As a chef , it actually impressed me how much they managed to make the food not taste like food. You would think simple ingredients or dishes would at least taste a LITTLE like themselves - but no. Refried beans? Tasted like water. Salsa? Bitter and sour. Cheese? Gloopy and not even melted. Not one fried thing (fries, crispy taco, etc) hit the table with remotely enough color on it. Everything seemed heavily salted, but still didn't taste correct.
To top it all off, front of house service was abysmal. Buss boys were SLOW to clear tables and many other employees loitered at the front while several tables were trying to get someone's attention. A manager was nowhere to be seen while the service quickly bombed.
I really feel bad for the servers, as there didn't seem to be any management present to help lead the team. Multiple times I heard our server yell at the kitchen staff to get it together (good on you girl! 🙌 Get em!) so there definitely wasn't anyone in the back leading the charge either.
It's honestly flat out disrespectful to hire servers when you obviously don't have any management to ensure service is running correctly - servers don't get paid for that! I know times are tough but the servers should find a new job that actually respects them!
In conclusion, you couldn't PAY me to come back here, and quite honestly the level this place is operating at gives me no hope it will ever even be slightly ok unless it shuts down and another restaurant opens up in its place....
Read moreHow do you get bad Mexican food in South Texas?! My husband and I were truly shocked and very disappointed. We stopped here on our way home from a road trip to Indiana. The parking lot was full, the lights were bright, and we were starving, having not eaten since breakfast. We were seated right away, and the dining room is nice. That was the end of the positive aspects of our visit. I was asking the server about some menu items; her response to each question was "I'm not sure". This was never followed with "Let me go ask someone and I'll be right back". And I was asking pretty basic questions, like "On the meal with two enchiladas and two tamales, do I get to choose what kind of enchiladas and tamales? Because I'd like cheese enchiladas and pork tamales". I wasn't asking if the food was locally sourced or contained gluten or was made with organic ingredients. A simple question. Then came the chips and salsa. The chips were nice, but the salsa was watery and had no flavor. We asked for queso; when it came in a little bowl, it looked like soup. It literally just ran off the spoon. We did not even try it. Then came our entrees; the enchiladas were indeed cheese, but the gravy on them was not the rich, flavorful gravy that comes on every plate of every other restaurants' enchiladas. It was watery and flavorless and whatever sort of tiny bits of meat that was in it were gristly. I don't know what was in the tamales because they were pretty tasteless. My husband had tacos that were marginal (how can you possibly mess up a taco???) but the rice was hard and rather cold. The only slightly acceptable offering was the beans. Again, we were ravenous so at that point, any food we had should have tasted like ambrosia, right? Not so. And on top of all this, our server never came back to the table. We had to ask another person for more tea. We...
