My boyfriend and I decided to check out this place for dinner on Monday. First of all I want to say our waitress was lovely and the place looked nice and clean. But I'm afraid those are the only two nice things I have to say. We ordered a burger+fries and a regular size pizza. There were only 3 tables in the restaurant including us, yet our food took 20 minutes to make it to the table, which is a pretty unacceptable waiting time for an empty restaurant. It was about 70$ for two drinks (beer & soda) plus the food before tipping. I'm sorry to say this but the quality of the food doesn't justify the price by a long shot. The pizza is just not that good, much less for that price, it was actually quite bland and unremarkable. I personally wasn't a fan of adding the tomato sauce on top of the pizza instead of on the base. The pizza pie -which was more bread than pizza dough and resembled more a bad focaccia than a deep dish pizza- wasn't anything special, it wasn't even fully cooked and the ingredients just weren't flavourful. I left disappointed and thinking the food is way overpriced for what it is. The waffle fries were alright though, but nothing special or worth ordering again. My partner said the burger was good, although he ordered it medium rare and it arrived well done. Another major issue, something that gives off a bad image is the employees hanging around the bar watching Love Island on TV. It's not professional or appropriate for wait/kitchen staff to be leaning on the counters on their phones and sitting around watching TV while at work in front of customers. We wanted to give this place a chance but won't be coming back, the food was average at best yet very overpriced. At their price point I'd expect much higher quality and better trained staff. Lastly, although our waitress was amazing and very friendly, it would have been great if she’d had written down our order and read it back to us to make sure she got it right, rather than trying to memorise it, maybe that way my boyfriend’s burger would have been served medium rare as he ordered it,...
Read moreI’m so happy Emmy Squared is finally in Richmond! The pizza tasted just as amazing as I remember from the Brooklyn and West Village locations.
Quick tip for first-timers: Read the menu carefully when building your own pizza! If you don’t specify “Build Your Own,” you might accidentally order the classic pizza (which comes with red sauce on top, that’s just how it’s served here). But when you build your own, you can choose from three great base sauces: red, vodka, or the nut-free pesto (my personal favorite SO good).
I ordered the Emotional Damage cocktail (yes, that’s the name 🤣), and it was delicious… somewhere between a passion fruit martini and a margarita. Chris, the bartender, was super kind and attentive.
Will, the manager, was also incredibly thoughtful. I’m an elderly woman, and he went out of his way to make sure I was comfortable at the bar. A true gentleman.
My favorite pizzas:
The MVP: comes with all the sauces and that sesame crust? Fabulous! The Colonial: the jalapeños, charred pepperoni, and hot honey make it a spicy, mouthwatering dream. The Vodka: so much flavor in their sauce and topped with fresh basil. My daughter also tried the Le Big Matt Burger for the first time. She said the meat was super flavorful and juicy, and was shocked by how soft and buttery the pretzel bun was, perfectly toasted inside and packed with flavor thanks to their “Sammy” sauce.
Honestly, this place deserves more love. Just read the menu right, ask questions, and enjoy. Richmond is lucky to...
Read moreI really wanted to like this location because I’ve been to other Emmy Squared restaurants and always had great experiences.
I ordered an appetizer and a pizza. The appetizer seemed to take quite a while. Eventually I overheard the server asking the kitchen about it, and it turned out they hadn’t even started on it yet. Another staff member came out to apologize, and the appetizer followed soon after. To their credit, the Chicken Crunchers with pineapple chili glaze were excellent.
The pizza, unfortunately, was a disappointment. The first few corner slices were good, but the pizza overall seemed underdone and the toppings were very unevenly distributed. The ends had barely any sauce, while the center was overloaded. When I tried one of the middle slices, the center was doughy and inedible. It was about 10 to 15 minutes before my server came back around, and I explained the issue. She offered to put it back in the oven, but by that point I was starting to feel sick to my stomach, so I declined and asked her to take it away.
What left me most disappointed was the resolution, or lack thereof. I wasn’t looking for a free meal, but even a partial discount on the pizza would have gone a long way.
Overall, the service staff were polite and the appetizer was great, but the execution on the pizza and the way the situation was handled left me frustrated. I’ve enjoyed Emmy Squared at other locations, but this particular visit...
