My family went here for a dinner on a weekend evening. For entrees, we tried the brisket, half chicken, and pork sandwich. All of the meats were bland, at best. Being a "BBQ place", I was completely disappointed with the brisket. It didn't have any smokiness to it at all and didn't even taste like it had been seasoned with salt or pepper. The pork on the sandwich didn't taste as though it had been seasoned either. The chicken was juicy and did have a bit of flavor but wasn't spectacular by any means.
For sides, we had mac & cheese, baked potato, green beans, and steak fries. The mac & cheese was okay but nothing I would write home about. The baked potato was just a plain old Idaho potato and didn't even have any salt on it so that was disappointing. The green beans were most likely from a can and didn't appear to be seasoned, like everything else so far. The steak fries definitely arrived to the restaurant in a patient had and frozen. They were definitely NOT fresh.
Although the staff were pleasant and kind and the prices were not outrageous, I don't think we'll be going back. The food was VERY underwhelming and not what we would hope for in...
Read moreWe had a 2nd visit there, more to see if maybe our first impression was wrong. Unfortunately this 2nd and last visit was much like the first. Had the brisket, pork with mashed potatoes and green beans. The brisket was ok, not much smoked flavor or seasonings and the pork while moist was tasteless until i poured on the bbq sauce. mashed potatoes werent the best and the green beans tasted like the inside of a tin can. Also got a cornmuffin that tasted like itd sat in the back for a couple of days and was chewy. While the meal was hot, it was tasteless and not like what is expected in a BBQ restaurant. If they truly smoke the meats, they may want to add seasonings and rubs to give it some flavor. Best part of the meal was the service(our waitress and hostess were very nice)fresh bread with the...
Read moreWent a few months back, can't say I was impressed. The brisket was rubbery and had seemingly been microwaved, I'm not sure that whoever made it understood what seasoning is. Ribs were the same, though perhaps ever-so-slightly better as rib meat won't rubberize. Good bbq shouldn't need sauce, but sometimes great sauce can nullify poor meat. The sauces were intriguing but not that good. The mac-and-cheese wasn't bad but seemed like the generic food service offerings. For what it's worth, the fries were very good and I have no complaints about the service I received.
Given the lack of seasoning on the meat and generic mac-and-cheese, I highly doubt I just caught them on a bad day. As such, I can't say I recommend Smok'n Jo's as you'll have better options on the...
