Seriously, you have to go to this restaurant. This is located along 3rd St near Melanie Wine bar, was recently occupied by Chicas tacos. I'd say it's casual fair, feels like an upscale cantina, even has an awesome selection of local wine & beer. It's always turning over orders (they do a lot of to go, delivery) but usually pretty unhectic & pleasant to dine in. It's a good spot to visit with a small group of friends for lunch/dinner or to dine solo. Has great LA chill vibes, trendy and cute.
The flavors, I can say with all sincerity are totally out of this world. A legitimate flavor explosion, I kid you not, with every bite. It feels like comfort food from cultures that come together in a beautiful symphony, nay, melody of family and welcoming.
I know that sounds ridiculous, but it's true. Every time I've visited one of the owners is there, and they've told me it's a blend of their family traditions coming together. Mom's beans I believe are the special dish Mom (maybe grandma?) would serve at the holidays. It remind me of my grandma's beans, tho a very different recipe, the same feeling of love.
My husband and I visit once every week or so, sometimes take out, sometimes dine in. Great for us because he doesn't love Indian food often, so he gets his favorite Carne Asada burrito & I get what I want. :)
I'd say it's priced higher than Planchas per say, but it's by and large a step above a regular cantina. High quality ingredients, one of a kind recipes, and it always fills us up.
I swear I'm not getting paid for this or anything just really love this spot & want to see it grow. To show my unbias...
I had any frustration about the place, it's that their hours are a bit unpreferred. I often work late, so I miss their weekday order timelines, and they're closed for random dates & hours mid-day. I know the limits they set are to really serve the function of family life, and for now they have to stay limited, so they can keep a work-life balance. For ex today they are closed for Mother's Day, but hey, you don't get the beans if we can't have a moment to thank Mom... Then my frustration melts bc I realize we have to flexible and kind and understanding, and I can get the same burrito tomorrow. They are also really great about updating their hours online for those events, holidays, etc, so just check!
Tbh there isn't an item here that I don't like. Some items are a bit drier than a usual burrito (for ex, curry is dry, so dry burrito if using for the beans) but I've found their salsa balanced it all. Also great micro brewery / wine / LA / Mexican selects to drink and specialty...
Read moreI’m so glad I ventured outside of Old Town to try this Mex/Indian fusion place.
Came with a big group so got a try a lot of dishes. Every dish is a fusion of both cuisines, some a bit more Indian and some a bit more Mexican. All super tasty.
Of the dishes we tried:
Masala birria bowl - this may have been my fave, I think leaned more Mexican with hints of Indian spices. Def would get again Pibil Chick & Nachos - my fave of the two nachos we got. The perfect blend of both cuisines. Gets a little heavy after a while but still delicious and great to share. Jeera Chick Chaat-chos - vegetarian friendly option, tasty, solid. 1/2 Rotisserie meal - comes with two sides, succulent, flavorful chicken with plethora of sauces, and my favorite type of tortillas (think Sinaloa style) Fenugreek esquires - a fun twist on your usual street corn Mom’s beans and roasted cauliflower also were amazing.
Portions are huge and come with lots of sauces and pickled things. Their chili oil was killer in the best way possible.
Super friendly service. I think the owner was out cashier. Highly recommend this place if you’re in Pasadena...
Read moreLoved, it was delicious! Not sure how any other reviewer could call this food flavorless, how dead are your tastebuds, my friend. I'm Indian and have always seen the connections between my family's food and Mexican food, especially when you've been to spice markets in both countries, and I can't believe no one in LA has done this yet - I was really excited to try this place. The jeera chicken was delicious and juicy, jeera can easily overwhelm a dish, but the flavoring was perfectly subtle. The potatoes were ON POINT, just like our potato fry dishes at home. I loved all of the condiments too, from the cucumber salad, to the onions, to the spiced yogurt, to the peanuts in there, which tasted like the podi we eat at home with idli and sambar. The tortillas were homemade, and so good! I wish I had asked for the molasses, and they didn't have the Coco Rose drink when I went in, which I'm dying to try. The man up front was the friendliest person ever, I felt really welcomed, and he talked me through the menu, too. Can't wait to come back, would definitely make the 40-minute drive -...
