Every time I come to Black Bear Diner it’s an amazing experience. Service: 10/10 The people who work here are always so nice! My server Alex was exceptionally kind and he is a top notch server, making sure all his tables are happy and feel like they are being taken care of. I love how he calls us “familia”, it’s the sweetest thing! Also, the food didn’t take long at all to come out, even though they were slightly busy. However, I am not one to complain about how long it takes good food to hit my table. Us Americans need to learn some patience.
Food: 9/10 First off, the menus here are adorable newspapers! Makes me have flashbacks of back in the day watching movies where the dad would be reading his paper over a cup of coffee and waiting for the wife to put down a warm plate of yummy breakfast! Today I had the Shasta Veggie Scramble without cheese and it was delicious! I threw the salsa they provided all over my scramble and dived into the veggie heaven on my plate. Think veggies and eggs are bland and won’t fill you up? Think again! Tons of flavor and the portion size at Black Bear is no joke. My only tiff with this place is their grits. I’m a huge fan of grits but the grits here constantly come out lumpy. They just need to be whipped with some extra love and I’m sure they’d be perfect! But my love for grits makes me get them every single time either way and I just smash out the lumps as I eat them.
Atmosphere: 10/10 I love how this place feels like a cozy log cabin! Makes me want to curl up after I eat all my grub and hibernate like a mama bear! Every Black Bear is decked out with the cutest wooden bears and all kind of small decor/decals that gives this place this warmest feeling for individuals and families alike.
Overall this place is by far one of the best family diners I have ever been too (blows Dennys and IHOP out the water with ease). The warm ambience, the friendly staff and the huge (and price friendly) platters can steal all kinds of business away from other restaurants! Thank you Black Bear Diner for...

Free Bear's Choice for E-Club members
Usually, I visit the Black Bear Diner in Buena Park, but my adventures would take me to San Pedro, that particular day, so I made plans to visit the Signal Hill location prior to going home. Free food & a new review, to boot!
Bear's Choice consists of-
Main - 2 sweet cream pancakes, sweet cream waffle, 2 biscuits & gravy,2 thick cut French toast. Upgrades for an additional fee are stuffed blackberry French toast or cinnamon roll French toast.
Side - 2 thick cut smoked bacon, 2 link sausage, hickory smoked ham steak. Upgrades for an additional fee are 1 hot link or 2 roasted red pepper chicken sausage links.
2 eggs
Bear's Choice (Biscuits & Gravy)- I wanted savory over sweet, so I chose the biscuits & gravy w/ bacon & eggs over easy. Love that bacon! Long, salty strips of pork goodness. The eggs were great. The runny yolk was great, especially when sopped up by the biscuits. Speaking of, the biscuits had a crusty exterior, with a fluffy interior. The gravy was creamy, and while I enjoyed my choice, I mainly ate the insides of the biscuits. Biscuits sopped with egg yolk & hot sauce - Bliss!
Service was great. I was checked on multiple times. The wait for my order wasn't long, and after showing my QR code on my phone to the cashier, I was quickly out the door and on my way.
Black Bear Diner proves it's solid & reliable. The Buena Park location is more expansive, but Signal Hill still hits the birthday month spot. I enjoyed my free Bear's Choice meal & the service wasn't lacking, either. Black Bear Diner has something for everyone, at all times of day. It's nice having another location to dine at, for when my next birthday comes around & I happen to be...
Read moreThe food was GREAT; however, the service was horrible. My friend and I arrived Saturday morning, October 1, 2022. We ordered breakfast (excellent) and the waiter disappeared. Finally, we got his attention and asked him for water and additional napkins. Then, he disappeared again. About 5 minutes later, I noticed him walking in the kitchen area so I flagged him down again to let him know the top on the pepper was loose and the whole bottle of pepper had fallen everywhere on my eggs, my plate, and the table where I was sitting. He replaced my eggs but didn't offer to clean the table or my other plate where pepper had splashed everywhere. He didn't even call the bus boy over. I cleaned the mess up. He came back shortly to introduce us to another waitress and told us if we need anything she would help us. She walked by several times assisting other customers never asking us if we need more coffee, water, or anything else. My friend and I sat there for 30 minutes waiting for refills. We saw him when he return from his break but he didn't check on us. I told my friend I was going to leave him a penny for his tip. Then we get to the check stand to check out and we waited, and waited no one showed up then I went looking for someone to check us out. I eventually found someone and she attempted to check us out then the cashier arrived with a bad attitude. I'm not going to that horrible place anymore. My friend informed me that Sunday afternoon she and her family had lunch at the Torrance, Black Bear and she had a...
