The service and food were phenomenal! On a rainy night, we sat out on the deck, under the comfort of a heater, with the stream rushing beneath us. Suddenly, my eyes started watering, and my nose and throat started burning, and the telltale smell of cigarette smoke wafted over. There's one end of the beautiful deck where smokers are seated, so they may enjoy a cigarette with their meal. The impact of this is that it ruins the whole experience for those of us who don't smoke. More smokers came out, and as I was trying to relish the flavors of my sumptuous burger, it was too difficult, as it was masked by the smoke which the smokers shared with us. I understand that a smoker has a right to smoke outside (though I thought they had to be a certain distance from the building) but as a non-smoker, who has no effect on the enjoyment of a smoker's meal, I think Mac's should take into consideration the effect that a smoker has on a non-smoker's meal. It only takes one smoker to completely ruin the experience of all of the others out there on the deck. The deck is a lot more lovely than the inside. The smokers get a prime spot on the deck, and the 2 times I've now sat out there, they are upwind, and the smoke drifted down to the end of the deck furthest from the smokers. I would absolutely give 10 stars to Mac's, if I could, and if they created a solution where we could enjoy the deck without the negative effects of the cigarette smoke. Whether they create a completely different space for the smokers, or build a wall to separate the smoking section from non-smoking, it would benefit the majority of the population, which doesn't enjoy breathing in second-hand smoke. I'm just so sad that it seems the smokers are prioritized, and I'll never be able to sit comfortably out on the deck and fully enjoy it, so my only option is to either sit in the less pleasant inside, or patronize a place where I can sit outside without having to breathe in second hand smoke. I understand that the smokers are probably equally sad that they can't smoke inside, but this is probably the only place in the world where I wish they were allowed to smoke inside, just so they wouldn't come smoke outside...
Read moreWait time was too long, the To-go orders get priority, families can't sit in the pretty outdoor area, and the servers don't seem to care. Venue is okay, food is acceptable, but temperature inside was way too cold. Also, even before 9pm this restaurant is not family friendly. We waited a full hour for our food without the servers coming by to update us on how our food was going, so we felt forgotten. We had ordered soup as a side and had asked for it to come out earlier like our salads. However, it came out at the same time as our main dishes. She took our beers away too early while there was still some left. She also didn't apologize for the significant wait, keep us appeased with appetizers, or offer any form of compensation. Just the lame excuse that the kitchen got too many To-go orders. In order to be able to sit outside, everyone in the group has to be 2...because that is the smoking area... apparently... Also, my 26 year old fiance got his ID bent and examined for a full minute to make sure it was real... a bit paranoid... she even asked us a few questions about why we visiting. After our meal, a few of our To-go boxes were dirty and no one working in the restaurant said anything to us as we left. And to top it all off, both my fiance and I got sick from their mac's mac. I had an upset stomach all night which is rare for me. I had a pretty bad experience at this restaurant for dinner, so I wouldn't...
Read moreI've been to Mac's Place several times and I'm always satisfied. The food is good and you'll get unique menu options, such as the Jalapeno Bacon Mac and Cheese, which is a favorite. The atmosphere is nice in this historic building, although it can get noisy at times especially when the evening bar crowd shows up.
I love that they have some old-timey arcade games like Galaga and Ms. Pac-Man. Just their presence helped occupy my three-year-old son, as well as another toddler who happened in on the same night. The staff didn't seem to mind that the kids were playing on the machines without dumping any quarters into them, and in fact said it happens all the time. The parent of the other toddler mentioned that she loves coming to Mac's because her kid can stay entertained while they wait on their food.
The only downside to this place is that the back patio, which has a beautiful view of the river, is only available to people over the age of 21. That means families can't take their kids to eat outside and enjoy the nice views, no matter what time of day it is -- early morning or evening. I wish they'd at least open it up to families in the earlier hours because it really is a gorgeous view.
If you're in Silverton for any reason and need a bite to eat, you should definitely consider Mac's. I even occasionally make the 30-minute trip from Salem to eat here because I enjoy...
