Service was great, the decorations were unique (really loved the menus styled as vinyl records), and the music was classic, so no complaints in those departments!
However, I was really bummed out by the side of seasoned rice I ordered with my tacos. It seemed like it was intentionally toasted or grilled in an attempt to give it a smokey flavor and texture but instead it just made for a dry, off-flavored side dish. Iāve been to places that prepare their seasoned rice similarly, and itās usually great, but sadly I canāt say the same for Vinylās take on the dish. I debated giving 3 stars overall instead of 4 because of this, but having lived in both SD and AZ, I know not to hold Mexican food to the same standard here as I do in the southwest. That said, seasoned rice is a staple side dish alongside tacos and beans, and its quality should be prioritized accordingly.
Aside from that, the chicken tinga taco was spicy, flavorful, and stuffed generously with chicken, making it well worth the price. The side of black beans mixed with green chiles and topped with cotija was also great. The guac and roasted red salsa were nothing to write home about, but they were certainly on par for a midwest Mexican restaurant, and didnāt disappoint. I personally didnāt care much for the barbacoa taco, but finding good barbacoa in the midwest is a rarity anyway, so thatās ok. Finally, I love green chiles, but the green chile salsa was sour and otherwise flavorless. It would have benefitted from the addition of serrano or jalapeƱo to give it a little more depth and flavor, but I suppose itās good to have a mild salsa on hand for those who donāt prefer spice.
Overall, Vinyl Taco is worth a visit for the cool atmosphere, and the food is generally good by midwest/Americanized Mexican standards, but it probably isnāt the place to go if youāre looking for a more authentic Mexican street food locale (in which case I recommend Simonās Tacos). I will be back to try the carne asada and carnitas tacos as Iām hoping those staple menu items will make up for the rice as the chicken tinga taco did. Might even try the rice again in the hope that this first visit was just a one-off,...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreI went here for the first time with a group of friends for dinner at 6:30 pm. It was my first time going out postpartum with my child. When I sat down my drink order was taken and brought back to me. As soon as I took my baby out of the car seat to let a friend hold Jimmy the manager came storming over to our table and yelled across the table āthe baby has to go weāre 21 and overā. I was embarrassed infront of all of my friends. My husband called after I got home and was told my friend group was just on the wrong side. My son would have been fine to be there if our table would have moved. I was never told this I was just sternly talked to and embarrassed in front of everyone. The manager has HORRIBLE communication skills if this is how you talk to customers. My friend group would have been happy to move tables given we were in the wrong section and that was on us. Secondly, donāt take my order and bring me my order and not say anything about us being in the incorrect section. The door was opened for me so I didnāt see it said 21 and over on it, which again is MY FAULT. But simply be respectful come over and tell me that. Donāt just yell across a table āthe baby has to goā. With the way the manager Jimmy embarrassed me and talked to our friend group I wouldnāt be surprised if this business has declining customers if he continues to talk with...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWould have been much, much higher if the amount of food you get was equal to the prices. In all honesty the flavor of the food was terrific, however the tacos were gone in three bites (two bites for me) the chimichanga was roughly the size as you'd find in a store bought package, but a little bit bigger. The only thing we didn't like, flavor-wise, was the enchilada as it was cold and fairly bland. Charging $4 for a taco seemed a bit steep, but we thought that everything would be good sized portions... oh how wrong we were. Add on the fact that they dont even give any sides with their dishes despite charging $4 for a street taco and $8 for a chimichanga. I'm not saying fillers are good, but rice, beans, and even chips are a fairly inexpensive way to fill out a plate and give customers good value for their money. I know good, quality food can be pricey, but this seems completely disproportional when I spent $40 for two cokes, two tacos, a chimichanga, and an enchilada and left still hungry enough to stop at a fast food joint in order to fill up.
Would only go back, but only if they cut their prices, drastically, or if someone else was...
