Last Thursday in honor national Pizza Day my school served Sal’s pizza at lunch and I have too say it made a big impression. As far as school pizza(and most school food goes) I don’t have high expectations. Not that it’s bad it’s not, it’s certainly edible. But it’s not great. It’s cheap, it’s salty, It’s like food you could get at McDonald’s. Most importantly it’s all the same. Sure there’s different kinds of food but it all has a uniform quality. Among all this monotony Sal’s pizza stood out. It brought a store class to the school cafeteria with it’s flavors that tasted like it just came out of the oven in an Italian restaurant. In school pizza the flavors all blend into one, but in Sal’s each ingredient was discernible. The cheese had slight sharp bite to it and was unquestionably authentic unlike the suspicious oddly colored stuff you sometimes see. The sauce wasn’t clumpy or overly sweet. I actually tasted like tomatoes but with a hint of basil that gave it that real restaurant flavor. The crust was doughy but not soggy and you could even taste some garlic in it. Sal’s pizza also had the perfect ratio of sauce to crust too cheese. Some people complained that they wasn’t enough sauce but I personally disagree. In fact I think that many pizzas have far too much sauce. It becomes overpowering to the point that you can’t appreciate the other flavors. Sal’s pizza did not have that problem it’s pizza had the perfect amount of sauce. You could taste it but it’d wasn’t overpowering, you could still appreciate the other ingredients. I can’t say for certain how Sal’s pizza measures up against other restaurants but I can say this, in the world of school cafeteria pizza Sal’s is the cream of the crop. It brings the taste of Restaurant class pizza and I am very excited for its next appearance on...
Read moreIn previous visits I would generally give this place 3 stars at best. Pizza gets an easy curve, and generally most places with a straight dough and "not too much sauce that the toppings slide off" would get a solid 4 stars. Sals is basic pizza and a bit below average. I can't even give it 3 stars at this point.
However with an open kitchen it is concerning to see people handling your food right in front of you without properly covering their face during the Covid-19 pandemic. I spent 15 minutes waiting for a slice, watching both people behind the counter alternate between leaving their nose out of their mask and using the mask as a chin strap. There was not even a single moment where either employee covered their nose with the masks. 15 minutes later my slice of pizza still hasn't gone into the oven, so I canceled my...
Read moreI have been ordering from Sal’s for well over a year and loved it but recently the service and food has gone down to tubes. I have called ahead at 3:00 and ordered food to pick up at 4:30, when I got there they had not even started putting it together. I canceled the order and walked out. Yesterday I called ahead and ordered 4 slices of pie and was told it would be 5 minutes. 20 minutes later they were just putting it in the oven and because I complained about it not being ready again we got pie that I had to finish cooking at home. The dough was tough and tasteless. I will go to A1 Brick Oven tomorrow in Vernon...
