Sushi Zen in Dallas ❤️ The Best Japanese Food in South Lake

I used to be a regular at Sushi Zen, visiting once a week because they once had decent-quality sushi that I enjoyed. However, I'm sad to say that my recent experiences have been far from pleasant. Let's start with the service – the host's behavior was nothing short of rude. A welcoming atmosphere is crucial in any restaurant, and it's disheartening to see this aspect fall short. Now, onto the most crucial part – the food. I was shocked to find that the sushi, which used to be fresh and delightful, has taken a nosedive in quality. The provided picture speaks volumes - the sushi didn't look appetizing, and the fishy smell was a clear sign of its age. Freshness is paramount when it comes to sushi, and this was a letdown. Sushi Zen, you used to be a go-to spot for me, but I'm sad to say that I won't be returning anytime soon. It's essential to maintain the standards that initially drew customers in. I hope Sushi Zen takes these concerns to heart and works towards a revival in quality and service.

I’ve been here a few times now and the service is always great. They get pretty busy on nights so I would call and make a reservation if you don’t want to join the wait. This is definitely one of the better sushi restaurants in Grapevine - Southlake area if it’s not the best. The fish always tastes fresh and they have a wide range of hand rolls and sushi to choose from! I tried the Thai Shrimp Tempura and it was AMAZING! The peanut sauce and coconut flakes were a great touch and I just thought the roll itself was so creative and well executed (I’ll be getting it again, for sure.) The ninja roll too was really good. I did try eel for the first time and while I can’t lie, I was a little apprehensive to try it when it came out, it was really good! Super tender (not what I expected) and just had a good flavor.

So I was just there tonight. Our third time ever eating here and we usually bring other sushi lovers here as a ways to try a new restaurant. We usually go to Sushi Sam and we eat out a lot. We have some friends that hadn’t tried this place yet so we took them here tonight. We had a reservation and ordered a ton of food for 4 people.

We ate fast and the food was okay. Just okay. Not bad and definitely not as good as Sushi Sam. But the service is what made me want to write a review…

We finished eating and I tipped a lot because I used to be a server back in college and I know how much it means to them. 30 or so minutes after signing the receipt an older man from their staff asked us to leave since they had so many customers. There were only 2-3 families of 4 waiting. They had other tables emptying out at that time too.

We were there for less than 2 hours and this was the first time this had ever happened to any of us. I used to be a server too for years and had never done this to a table. It was kinda shocking. We politely left but it left a real bad taste in our mouths.

I simply told my friends that we will never be coming back to this place again. Just not worth it to show people a new sushi restaurant when the service is going to be like this. Not a big deal, since there are many other sushi places in the area. Sushi Zen will be fine without us and we will be fine without them. We will just stick with Sushi Sam and their better food and service.

Conclusion: if you want to have great sushi in an amazing atmosphere with great service, then please don’t come here. It’s just...

Soooo disappointed! Received terrible service from the moment we walked in the door. We stopped in for a late lunch and as we were waiting for our table the host crossed our name out and seated the party who arrived after us. We spoke up and they told us to wait and they would get a table ready. We were initially seated by the front windows which were radiating heat and I asked very nicely if we could move tables. It was uncomfortably warm. About half the restaurant was empty with plenty of open tables. The man helping us said he had to ask his manager and they ended up moving us to a tiny table in the back corner near the restroom. We sat down and were forgotten about. No one came to take our order or check on us. We sat there for nearly 30 mins without acknowledgment. The table right next to us was being still served and waited on. Sadly, we left without ordering anything. Hopefully we can come back and try it again and if so I’ll update my rating, but we were really disappointed in our first...

We have been going to Sushi Zen once a month for the last two years for our monthly happy hour dinner with my coworkers. Unfortunately, the service has been getting progressively worse. We usually love eating here because they are fast and have great food. However, the service today was so bad that it warranted a review on Yelp. We sat for 20+ minutes without receiving the drinks we ordered. The waiter never came by to check on us or assist us. When we finally had to flag someone down, they acted annoyed that we had called them over to the table. He appeared visibly frustrated with us (perhaps because it was a large group?) but no matter what we shouldn't feel like we are an inconvenience as paying customers. We were very disappointed. Our food orders came out and different times so some people had food while others had to wait another 15+ minutes for their food. Just all around a poor experience here. We will likely be finding a new place to have our monthly dinners. Good food!...
