Went to the Mohawk House last night to celebrate a birthday dinner with another couple. I have always wanted to try this place as my girlfriend lives nearby. The place on the outside is gorgeous, high up on a hill and building made of stone. The bar area looked wonderful and I was amazed to see all of the different beers on tap. The inside is very upscale country, not exactly what I was expecting but still quite tastefully done.
I had heard nothing but good things from people about the food so I was looking forward to dining here especially since the menu has a lot of seafood.
Upon opening the menu I was a little surprised by the prices (specials were upwards of $50) but I have dined at City steakhouses that were pricier. There were quite a few menu items that caught my eye. Both of us were drawn to the boathouse seafood over pasta; shrimp, scallops and cockles in a creamy Thai basil sauce.
We both ordered the cream of mushroom soup as an appetizer. The soup was outstanding, little did we know this would be the highlight of our evening! Service was not good at all. When fine dining at these prices one should expect impeccable service and not to want, need or ask for anything. This was not the case. While our waitress was nice she was not very attentive and the bus boys became our "go to people " when we needed water refills or drinks and corrections in our order.
The pasta and seafood was literally SWIMMING in the heavy sauce. There were 2 descent sized shrimp and 2 small scallops with 2 minuscule cockles. All of the aforementioned seafood was terribly overcooked. As she began to eat she noticed something in her meal that was clear not seafood. At first glance I thought it was a deformed cockle shell but, under closer examination we realized it was in fact a piece of plastic! Knowing my way around a kitchen in both design and food I believe it was a piece from a cabinet or drawer hinge wheel that slides to open or close them. We asked the waitress to come over and we showed her what we had found. She did offer to have another dish made for her but my girlfriend was, understandably so, now put off by the dish. The waitress offered to swap it out for an appetizer. What??? I could not believe what she said. "How about bringing another menu and she will order another main course?" I told her. She agreed and came back.
Next dish was sea scallops with king crab legs. 4 scallops and half a leg. Scallops were cooked perfectly and quit tasty. The crab leg was overcooked and too rubbery to consume. I should note that the waitress took all the silverware with the pasta dish and did not return with any with the new dish causing her to wait again for her to return and ask again for something.
Dessert and coffee came and 3 out of 4 of us got what we ordered. Our friend sat there with no dessert until we again asked a busboy to get our waitress.
In my years of dining experiences at every level (diners to Del Friscos) have had some hiccups and some disasters but each time it was handled directly and in person by a manager. Our check came without so much as a mention by the manager or the waitress, not even an apology! Her main course was taken off the tab and a small additional amount that we could not quite understand but whatever.
Unhappy with our experience to that point we decided to cut our losses and go elsewhere (St. Moritz a few blocks away) for after dinner drinks and good...
Read moreVery disappointed with our family's Mother's Day visit. It appeared management overbooked reservations for today. Both the service and the food were unsatisfactory. From being asked to retrieve the beer and wine menus from the floor in order to review them (the waiter apologized saying that's where they were kept to avoid disappearing from the upper floor) to being told if we weren't ready to place our meal orders when our waiter came to take drink orders, he didn't know how soon he could return to do so. At that point we hadn't had much time to peruse the menu, but we decided to go ahead and order. As time passed, we noticed a party seated after us being served before us by the same waiter.
There were not enough utensils on the table, nor were we given plates when the dinner rolls and butter arrived. As we were still waiting for drinks, my son ended up helping himself to silverware and plates from an unoccupied table.
When two of us placed our order of two appetizers each, we specifically stated that we'd like them served as our meal. That didn't happen. We each recieved one along with the other appetizers ordered. Our second selection, Mushroom Toast, arrived with the other entrees. The toast was too well done to be cut with a knife and inedible. Only the toppings could be eaten. An order of scallops seemed just undercooked. An order of French Fries for a child never arrived, nor did an order for a soda until it was asked for. We decided to cut our losses and request the check rather than ask for the fries.
Another indication that they may have overbooked was the condition of the restrooms. Our reservation was for 3:30. By that time, the trash containers in both the men's and women's lavatories were overflowing and spilling on to the floor. On such a busy day, you'd think there would be sufficient staff to keep the facilities tidy.
Finally, there was difficulty settling our bill when the waiter didn't notice a gift card as well as a charge card enclosed in the folder. He was aware of the mistake when he returned to the table. We were given the choice to save the gift card for our next visit, or he'd reverse the charge, and redo the transaction. With no plans to return after today, we instructed him to satisify the bill using both cards.
Having eaten here in the past and being satisfied, we were prepared to pay the price for a nice meal. I am not one to write reviews, but today's experience was one that needed to be shared. The only satisfaction we recieved was not being charged for the forgotten soda and the fries. Before writing, I read other reviews and found others who have had disappointing dining...
Read moreWe had our wedding reception at The Mohawk House on April 8, 2017. Needless to say it was the most unorganized, careless and stressful experience we have ever had. From the very beginning it was next to impossible to get in touch with our wedding coordinator at the Mohawk house, then we were passed off to the owner Racheal who was also impossible to get hold of. We would call several times a day, text, email and no answer. The week before our wedding we had yet spoken to someone about menu choices and when we brought up the lack of professionalism displayed by the owner herself, no apology was given or even recognition for that matter. The day of our reception, we prepaid for 50 bottles of wine for our guests and the wine station was put outside the venue space by the door, which in return caused so much chaos as guests had to keep leaving the room to get a glass of wine and there was no one serving them the wine either! It was just sitting there, outside the door in a bucket of ice. Unbelievable! A minor could have went and poured himself a glass! To add insult to injury, we never even got to meet the owner herself! She never once showed her face at all, not even after us expressing how unhappy we were with the severe lack of communication! To make matters worse, our menus which they printed were a true disgrace!!! The ink was runny all over the menus and looked like the printer was running out of ink due to skips and gaps and smears in the lettering! Seriously!?! Is that what our business is worth? Lastly... our event was to end at 10pm, at 10pm SHARP, the waiters were coming into our venue space and DISMANTELING tables with our guests still sitting!!! They actually turned on the lights, the walked in with no decency at all and just started taking tables down with guests still sitting, getting their bearings together as they were preparing to leave and I was seeing my guests off. Seriously! You couldn't wait until my guests walked out of the room to take tables down?!? Beyond rude! I will NEVER EVER in my life book another event at the Mohawk house. It was a circus show to say the least! No one communicates with you until the very last minute, the owner sees you as a number/check, the waiting staff is rude and incompetent. My husband and I didn't even get our salads until the whole room was done eating! They forgot about the bride and groom! Where do they hire these people? Never again! Not to mention everything on their menu is an up charge and the steaks that were ordered which were supposed to be 10oz strip steaks looked butterflied because they were so thin!!! Never...
