Converse Deli was a family favorite, always brought our out of state visitors there...but no more. I had taken a half day vacation from work and enjoyed a much needed mani and afterward decided to drop in to my favorite deli. This is quite unusual for me to go into a restaurant alone, but knew it would be worth it. There were only a few tables occupied when I sat down, and was immediately served (how awesome) except the waitress seemed put out that I ordered a Chardonnay. I thought well, maybe it's unusual at this time knowing it was after 2 pm, but I was on vacation. Another waitress took my order with a pleasant smile, so I was texting my mother that I was sitting in our favorite deli. 3 minutes later my sandwich was thrown on my table, without a word and as I turned to say something to the waitress, she was already to far to say anything. I sat there dumbfounded...what did I do to deserve this treatment. The thought hit me to check their hours, sure enough they close at 3 pm and it was 2:44 when I googled it. While finishing half my sandwich, I decided that it was time to go. I wasn't going to be made to feel like an intruder. I got a box for my sandwich and went to pay. My waitress was the cashier and I apologized that I didn't know what time they closed until I had my sandwich thrown at me. I paid my bill, but decided not to leave a tip which is the first time in my life (1 HR earlier the mani girl got a $15 tip for a $40 mani) I immediately called my family and said I will never go there again, we will find a new deli. In my 51 years I have never felt so unappreciated as a patron. Maybe she was having a bad day, but at least at Chick-fil-A I always get "it's...
Read moreDuring a recent trip to Spartanburg a friend and I visited Converse Deli based on two recommendations from people we met. The place is easily found situated in a small shopping center across from Converse College. The deli has a nice patio area with seating that is surrounded by a small garden with freshly grown vegetables and herbs. Inside, one finds a funky, hip little diner that is comfortable but not pretentious.
With this being my first visit I was a little confused on the process (no hostess or greeter) but upon heading to the counter, I learned if you want to dine-in you can just take a seat. While the deli was busy during my visit, service was prompt and courteous. I was glad to learn of how the deli uses all locally grown produce. Knowing this I opted for a vegetable panini (even though I am not vegan or vegetarian). My friend ordered one of the turkey sandwiches.
While awaiting our sandwiches, our server was attentive and sure to keep our glasses filled. Our sandwiches arrived with a compliment of chips and a pickle. And, here's where I found a surprise. The sandwiches were delicious. My vegetable panini was fantastic, hearty, and had a delightful vinaigrette dressing that made each bite pop with brightness and flavor. If all vegetable dishes were this tasty, I could see myself dropping meat out of my diet without too much trouble. What a surprise! The final bill was comparable to what any quality sandwich lunch will run ($9-ish per person with drinks). Now that I'm moving to Spartanburg, I will certainly be heading back to Converse Deli. This place is a true gem with a quality product....
Read moreHATEFUL. RUDE. GO TO CRIBB'S!!! Money hungry and disrespectful to customers. Today, I treated my sister to lunch here. I have never been so embarrassed by a lunch choice. We ordered the War Eagle and it was not edible, she took two bites of her wrap and both times she pulled bones out of her mouth. BONES LONG AS A TOOTH PICK. The service was TERRIBLE. We waited over 10 minutes for someone to refill our teas, and when we got tired of waiting my sister walked over to the tea pitcher sitting on the counter and was just going to pour herself more when a HATEFUL waitress told her she was not allowed to do that. When the lady followed her back to the table she only refilled 1 out of 3 empty glasses. We told our waiter about the bones and he disappeared after he "took her plate back to the kitchen." I waited around 10 more minutes for him to come back, but no he ignored me. While I waited I watched several other customers come in and walk right out because no one offered to help them. The cashier was RUDE and also did not ask how my dining experience was. Before, leaving I spoke with the manager and he COULD NOT HAVE CARED LESS. He told me that I should have told someone about the bones and service sooner. Ummm...I did and then he did not try to give me a refund or offer me another wrap. WORST RESTAURANT in Spartanburg. RUDE staff. WOULD NOT SERVE THEIR...
