We are visiting from out of state and wanted to try a breakfast place. This place had good reviews so we thought we would give it a try. We left there wondering how they have 4.5 stars. The place was pretty full when we arrived about 6:45am with only a couple bar seats. That was ok as we saw the pics and new it was small. We were never greeted by a friendly face or kind words. We sat, the blonde waitress (only waitress there) took our drink order. Came back to order and we asked if they had real butter, but they only had margarine. Waitress seemed annoyed and impatient as we were still looking at the menu. We told her we’d never been there before. Perfect time to make suggestions, but pointed to the specials board and just said I’ll give you time and walked away. Came back, still with annoyed face. We ordered and asked our eggs to be well done. My mom received her eggs not even close to well done, so she tried explaining to the waitress how she wanted them and she cut her off saying she understood. Well, if she understood it would’ve been done right the first time. The fried chicken on my mother clucker was just a round, frozen fried chicken patty they heated up and my eggs weren’t done but covered in gravy. She never came to check on us to see how we were or if we needed anything. She was kind and talkative to the people you could tell (by conversation) were regulars. The prep guy refilled my mom’s coffee (nice guy) and we had to ask the cook staff for a to-go cup and container because she never came back (she was standing there talking and saw). We packed up our leftovers and she placed the ticket down. We left walking by the waitress without her saying a “thank you” or “have a good day.” I think she knew we were put out by her. If she didn’t, she knew by her .09 tip. Lady, because of your attitude and service you missed out on a nice tip and a good review. And as far as the food goes, it...
Read moreI try and be as honest and informative as I can be. Reviews are opinions so you might make a choice and decide for yourself. My wife and I are recently retired from NYC. We lived on Staten Island which bordered NJ, the state with the most diners in it so we think we have a pretty good idea of what makes a great diner. Fresh, hot food, good coffee and fair prices. I believe we found that with The Skillet. We have been twice in a week, something we rarely do. We used to go to our favorite diner in NJ (The Kenilworth diner) once a month, usually after church on Sundays. In any event, the coffee at the skillet is on point. Fresh, hot and bottomless. I love my eggs served soft to me wether they are scrambled or poached. If a diner keeps serving me over cooked or hard eggs, that’s a sure way to lose me and my business. On our first visit I ordered scrambled soft and low and behold, they came out to the table SOFT! I ordered my eggs with grits and I watched one of the cooks making a fresh batch and he was using half and half to make them, so they were creamy and delicious. On our second visit I ordered my eggs poached soft and they came to the table soft, way to go! This is our go to breakfast spot from now on unless I can find something literally 5 minutes from my house that’s better. Now I wouldn’t be honest if I didn’t mention that the Skillets dining room can be very crowded, which is only a testament to how good this place is. But again, it’s crowded because the place isn’t very big inside and people tend to sit a little longer here because it does take a little longer for the food to reach the tables. You will get a server pretty quick, but because of the volume of customers, it takes both cooks more time to get the orders done. But no matter your wait, your food will make it to...
Read moreFirst time at The Skillet. Walked in because we wanted a diner and the place was full. One table open. This is a great sign and I was very hopeful of a good meal. It was lunch time but opted for breakfast. I had the Mother Clucker, crispy chicken breast on a biscuit covered with 2 eggs and gravy. This and a side of grits. The gravy was good, typical white pepper gravy. No complaints. Scrambled eggs, can't go wrong. They were great, not over cooked. Crispy chicken, yes, crispy and delicious. Good flavor and size. The biscuit was perfect, buttery, flaky and tasty. Wonderfully done. Great job to the cooks. Oh, the side of grits. Some of the best grits I've had in a while. They needed a touch of salt but that was all. Gave them a little extra butter and heaven. My wife had sausage patties, scrambled eggs and pancakes. Her meal looked great too. Tasted the pancakes, flavorful and fluffy. Not a heavy pancake, it was just right. Very good coffee too. I highly recommend The Skillet for breakfast and by the looks of the lunches being served, you won't go wrong there either. The staff were huddling to make sure everyone had what they needed. We'll be...
