This review is hard for me to leave, but I just want to be completely honest: Venus Pie is overrated and gets higher praise than they deserve simply because they are the ONLY pizzeria in Spartanburg that serves up NYC-style pies and jumbo slices. They've also been around for close to 30 years as a local staple. So for most people in the area they don't know any better.
I've visited a handful of times for both lunch and dinner service. They have been very inconsistent with both their food and their service. They are very hard to reach over the phone for call ahead orders at times.
After recent news of their acquisition by Hub City Hospitality (owners of Flock Shop and Willy Taco) however, I most certainly will not be returning. I wish Venus the best of luck during this ownership change.
On my most recent visit, I came in on a Saturday afternoon well before the dinner rush with a friend. We were one of only three tables dining in, but it took over 40 minutes to receive two premade slices.
Our server was fantastic! Unfortunately, I was very disappointed by the pizza. After the long wait, our slices arrived well-done and visibly burnt. We were offered fresh slices but declined, as we were too hungry. The crust was paper thin and lacked sauce and cheese, resulting in a cracker-like consistency at the edges. That said, the flavor was decent overall.
I've had better experiences in the past, with slices that were thicker and had a more traditional NYC sauce-to-cheese ratio. Perhaps we just caught them on an off day. I will say their dinner service and full pizzas were way more consistent than their lunch service every time I've come in.
The food is okay. To me it is not worth the wait, price, or the drive from Greenville. However if you live in Spartanburg they are a solid option for pizza. If you do dine in, just be prepared for a wait and specify your...
Read moreThis review is extremely hard for me to make as I have always loved this place. For years now I have had lunch here at least once a week. With the change of ownership I know a lot of people have been dumping bad reviews just because of that. I did not want to be that person. I have now went twice under the new ownership- the first time I sat at the bar. The staff that helped me were nice. The food wasn’t what it normally is. The guy that made it was talking to other staff about it being his first shift there as he is normally at another restaurant. The food came out and was extremely underwhelming, it was undercooked and still doughy inside. I figured this was just a one time thing as he was new. I checked out and told myself the next time I was in it would be better. I came back this week and tried again. The food was a little better this as I got a different item all together however it was still not something I would go back for. This time it was at least cooked all the way. However the slice was stretched so thin you could almost see through it. I’m all for the large slices but you could see the sauce through the bottom of the dough it was so thin. If felt like I was just eating toppings until you got to the crust. The wait time was longer than normal as well but I get it you’re busy at lunch and you can only cook so much at one time. The second time though has left me feeling really underwhelmed. I don’t think I’ll be back for a while. Maybe in a few months I will try again, but for now I’m going to look for another lunch spot. I do want to say the staff that helped me both times were wonderful. Extremely nice. I really wish the best for them and hate that this is my experience. I didn’t want to seem like I was adding on to others who have been bashing them and I really tried to give it a try but it’s not for me...
Read moreMy husband and I went to eat here last night around 7pm. It was our 1st time here. We wanted to find a pizzeria to go to before heading back to NC today. Found this gem through Google Maps and after reading the awesome reviews, decided to try it out. I am glad we did. The atmosphere was spectacular. The lady that took care of us was so polite, and also had a great sense of humor. (I don't remember her name. She was the one wearing a green shirt with the skeleton lady w/ the roses headband pic on the back). We sat at a table right by the awesome mural. Took a pic of it. Whoever did the mural has some exquisite talent. We ordered a side car salad, 1/2 order of breadsticks, 2 calzones, and 2 slices of pepperoni pizza. Everything was spot on. This is how a pizzeria should be. The salad was huge. Everything in it was fresh. The breadsticks were to die for. When the calzones came to our table, we couldn't believe how huge they were. Loved all the mozzarella that oozed out. It was delish. We took the pizza slices and the rest of the breadsticks back with us. Had them for breakfast today. It tasted great just like if we were to have eaten it that night. We were so impressed with everything, we made sure to leave a good tip. Got myself a shirt on the way out. The same one as the lady that took care of us wore. So, to sum it all up, you want your pizza, breadsticks, calzones done right? With great taste, fresh, and did I mention huge? All with a great staff and an awesome atmosphere? Go to Venus Pie Pizzeria here in Spartanburg, SC. Get there early on a Friday if you want to eat inside. It fills up quick and gets mighty lively. It's that popular. As the saying goes, it really is "Out of...
