Dear Management,
I am a frequent takeout customer and have always enjoyed your food—especially the dabeli, which has become a staple for me. It’s rare to find such good vegetarian food in North Houston, and with my family visiting from India soon, I had been looking forward to bringing them here.
Because of this, I was very disappointed by the experience I had on Friday, 8/22. While my visit the previous day (8/21) was excellent, with great food and attentive service, the following day was the opposite. I came to have my last meal before starting my fast, and the server completely ruined the experience.
I ordered dhokla and dabeli as appetizers, pav bhaji for my entrée, and dal tadka for my wife. Instead, the pav bhaji came out immediately, before any appetizers, and then a vada pav was brought out by mistake. When I pointed this out, the server insisted that I had ordered it. After some back and forth, he finally agreed to correct it, but by this time my pav bhaji was getting cold while my wife still had no food.
We were the only customers dining in at this point, yet we watched takeout orders being filled while we continued to wait. He failed to communicate the issue with the back of house. More than 20 minutes passed without receiving the dabeli or the dal tadka. When I approached the counter to ask, the employee became argumentative rather than helpful, insisting that the only mistake was the appetizer and that it takes time to make the food. He even made it a point to say that sometimes entrees will come out before appetizers. Even when the dabeli eventually came out, the dal tadka still hadn’t arrived—25+ minutes after my entrée had been served to me while my wife still sat there waiting.
At that point, I no longer wanted to continue the meal and requested a refund. Instead of handling it professionally, the employee argued over which items could be refunded. I was willing to pay for the drinks and dhokla we had already received, but he continued to dispute the dal tadka...which he somehow still failed to realize that it still had not come out…25+min later.
The entire interaction left me disappointed—not only because of the service delays, but because of the dismissive and argumentative attitude of the staff member. Dining out is about sharing a meal together, not eating courses 30 minutes apart. Bombay street food should not take 30min to prepare.
I truly hope this was an isolated incident with one staff member, as I have had consistently positive experiences before. I attempted to reach out to the email address listed on your website but the emails bounce. I also tried to call in but the days that I do, that...
Read moreFollowing a Google search and upon being repeatedly disappointed by the Indian food options/quality in the Houston metro area, ended up here for last night’s dinner. Was looking for something new and this was proximate - reviews too were promising. Found the place inside one of the gazillion strip malls that dot the city - in the first block on the north side of Rayford, east of I-45. Getting to the place from the west is a bit tricky due to the road divider and requires a tight u-turn at the next left. The place is across a loud and lively seafood restaurant. Parking is ample, though the seafood place tends to suck up most of them. Interior of Khau Gully was spartan gray, with a lady at the counter upon entry. Ordering via a hard copy menu (all vegetarian) and payment occurs right at the counter and one gets a number to take to a table or booth of one’s choice. The place was half-full (still plenty of space available), and looked clean - although had to request our table be thoroughly cleaned again due to crumbs, etc. Ordered chaats as some of the reviews had raved about them - dahi puri, bhel puri, aloo tikki, and mirchi pakora, with masala jeera soda (arrived in carbonated soda cans) to drink. Asked for the chaats to be made spicy. Food readiness is announced by the lady at the counter yelling out the number across the dining area - food arrived within 5-7 mins of ordering/paying, and looked fresh. Taste of all the chaats was spot-on, with a good balance of spice, tartness, salt, and sweetness - quantities were ample for the price ($ 7-8, each, roughly). Plasticware had to be picked up at the counter together with the food. A no-nonsense place with one of the better chaat offerings in the area. Would try again. Shied away from the South Indian dosas, idlis, and like snacks on offer as those tend to not be authentic (no offense, but the best ones are/need to be prepared from experienced native chefs from the area - Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra, and Tamil Nadu; most places serving such food tend to have chefs from the west or north of India and their South Indian food offerings are generally inauthentic). Overall, spent $42 on food and drink, including taxes and a 20% tip (trusting the tip goes to the folks serving/cleaning, which, sadly, I have found is not necessarily the case in Indian/Pakistani places - casting no aspersions here, just stating my experience). Good first experience at Khau Gully , plan to return to savor chaats again and also branch out to other offerings. Please do patronize this...
Read moreOne of the crappiest food I have EVER HAD in Houston. Utterly disappointed. As Indians, we probably make better tasting food at home. We had called ahead to ask if they can accommodate some dietary restrictions (no onion or garlic) for someone, and the lady on the phone had given us a few options, one being masala dosa. When we got the order, the lady said she could only give the coconut chutney since Sambar and other sauce had onion garlic. She should have been up front and let us know when we placed the order that it’ll just be a dosa with stale, tasteless potatoes. The only good thing about it was that it was crispy. I had ordered the Pau bhaji dosa and I received a plain soggy dosa with Pau bhaji (which had SO much garam masala that my stomach was burning) on the side. Who makes it like that? If I had to assemble the dosa and make it myself, I would have not ordered it. It was utterly disgusting and soggy. We had ordered some other items, like Bombay sandwich (couldn’t even eat half of it because it taste so bad), thumbs up soda which was flat, and onion and mirchi pakora which were nothing but thick tasteless batter. The ONLY semi edible thing on the menu was the chole bhature. Not worth the money we wasted here. I’m sorry… a lot to...
