MJ's Fish and Chicken Express — Restaurant in Springfield

Checked it out online first. Listened to reviews and pictures. The menu prices have changed folks. I went in expecting to pay about 12 for dinner, and it was 16. But that wasn't all. The whole menu was higher and the reviews said they had never seen such big wings.....um. I dont know how many wings they have seen but these were definitely smallish and dry. And if you want sauce...that's extra. So my son wanted hot wings usually served with ranch. Both the hot sauce and ranch would've been extra. The reviews also said the portions were so big. Nope. I ordered cheese fries and onion rings. Both way less than I'm used to getting. Btw if you want juicy wings with the sauces included and a ginormous helping of fries or mushrooms or onion rings- go to Whits End in Taylorville . That's where the portions are! So ok , dry small wings, small portions on sides that are also extra. Who ever bought dinner and the sides were extra? I ordered 2 dinners and 2 sides and 2 drinks. The waitress brought us our drinks. Then the 2 sides and one dinner. I thought she would go back to get the other dinner. When it became obvious she wasn't coming back, we tried getting her attention. She was filling something with the other waitress. Finally, what I assume was the owner kept seeing us look back trying to get her attention, he asked if we needed something and I said yeah, another dinner. The waitress came over and said she would put in the order and that she misunderstood since we ordered a side a piece, she thought we would only want one dinner. ...???... When she brought the dinner, she dropped the tartar sauce on the floor- picked it up and then gave it to us. Now I will say, we enjoyed the catfish, but not for the price we paid. Be prepared to be underwhelmed. Sides for 5 bucks extra? On a $16 dinner?And then have them be just a handful? Better bargains elsewhere. Bigger portions elsewhere. Nothing really stood out. I really wanted to like this place. Small inside but nicely decorated. I did however have to move a deconstructed cardboard box to sit down though. If you want to eat here, bring a full wallet and a slightly full belly. Oh, and make sure you specify that all of your table is eating dinner or you will be waiting while the rest of your table...

This is, bar none, the BEST food in Springfield IL! Margaret the owner and her husband Jerome have created a restaurant in a beautiful and quiet corner of Springfield that offers the best food you will taste not just in this city but in this entire area. Part of the reason is that Margaret trained as a chef at a prestigious cooking school in North Carolina and has spent years perfecting her recipes. But more importantly, it’s that their standards of excellent food are upheld with every single dish they send out to their customers. Every single time I go there, for years now, the food is just as excellent as the first day. And when Margaret encourages me to try new dishes, they are FANTASTIC TOO! Love, care, skill and hard work make a difference in every profession and business. But at MJs, you can literally TASTE it. If you’re in the area on a trip, or if you’re a local who’s never popped by, don’t be fooled by the humble exterior. It’s beautiful and very clean inside. Don’t be chased off by the small amount of parking, there’s a public park across the street with free parking! And don’t mistake the quiet humility of both Margaret and Jerome. They are EXPERTS of their craft. And if you come to MJs or have them cater an event for you you’ll taste that...

I had been looking for a place in town to get some good fried chicken. I kept seeing the name MJ's on social media, but kept overlooking it. This past Saturday, my husband and I finally decided to go, and, it was way more than I could have imagined. They have such a mouthwatering menu, that I had a hard time choosing where to start (because we're definitely coming back). I ordered the Walleye & shrimp, with onion rings and a couple of chicken wings on the side. I felt embarrassed by how much food we received! I could not finish it in one sitting - and, let me tell you, it was DELICIOUS and HOT!.
