My husband and I had dinner reservations and were promptly seated outside on the rooftop patio on a nice evening with a great view of the arch. Our waiter was excellent, very attentive to us. We started with a caesar and a harvest salad. The harvest was excellent, very fresh and vibrant. The caesar was terrible, tons of dressing on it yet barely any flavor other than a strong fishy taste. I made my husband switch me salads! For the entree, we both selected beef wellington with red wine demi served medium well with potato purée and glazed baby root vegetables. We also ordered a side of roasted asparagus and baked mac and cheese. We expected nothing less than excellence coming out of Ramsey's Kitchen, what we got was food that was allowed to rest too long rather than a hot and fresh meal. The pastry around the Wellington was dark and overdone with no flavor. The beef itself would have been cooked perfectly had it not rested too long or the outside hadn't been burnt. The demi glaze had good flavor, but again fell short because it was cold and there just wasn't enough on the plate. The potato puree and vegetables came out cold as well and the seasoning was missing. The roasted asparagus was cold, overcooked (borderline mushy), the sauce had thickened up so much from being cold and overdone the asparagus was stuck together, and the sauce was way to lemony. The mac and cheese was cold and overcooked so the cheese had mostly absorbed into the noodles leaving it dry and flavorless. For desert my husband had the sticky toffee pudding which tasted like cafeteria style bread pudding and I had the strawberry eton mess which tasted like my moms moms pink fluff, we expected much better. We shared a bottle of Moscato which was amazing, and was the highlight of my meal. They added a $15 charge to our tab for valet service. Our bill for our meal, along with the valet charge and gratuity came to $380.53. We were extremely disappointed in the quality of food for what we paid. Applebees would have had had larger portions and better quality for less money.
Unfortunately we chose not to speak with the manager before leaving the restaurant, but did it for two reasons. 1 . My husband does not like to "create a scene" or draw atention to himself (or us) by being the "Complainers", he gets embarassed. This was especially true after reason#2 The party of 3 across from our table was complaining about everything seemingly trying to get their meal free. My husband wouldn't dare complain after that out of fear that someone would think we complained because they did to het free food.
I feel this review is important because I don't not believe that the quality of our food was what Gordon Ramsey intended to be served when he began the restaurant and I believe he would want the feedback so there would be an opportunity to improve. We do not splurge like this often, so when we do we expect not to feel like we wasted our money, and for this meal we left feeling that way. I dont know if it was because it was towards the end of the evening, or maybe just an off night, but just about everything was pretty terrible. Having watched Gordon's shows for years, I have seen what is and is not acceptable to him and considering that, I guess we just expected to come in and eat at a 5 star restaurant where we would be served renowned dishes created by the Michelin-starrred chef who owns it. What we got was far from that, it was a disappointment and...
Read moreWe had Mother's Day brunch at Ramsay's Kitchen, which was an awful experience. It began with the hostess who was RUDE and completely disrespectful to our daughter, who hosted this outing.
As you will note from the pictures of Ramsay's Kitchen, the big view is a major part of the draw to this restaurant. When we were seated in the 1/2 empty restaurant the they put us a a table behind a large tree blocking the view entirely. My wife asked to be reseated, told the hostess she preferred to be on the patio, and was told they could not move us to the patio and that she would need time to move us, which turned out to be approximately 10 minutes during which we spoke with the server and ordered drinks. It is important to note that neither the main room nor the patio was ever more than 1/2 full during our time in the restaurant.
Although it was not yet time (10:45) for the kitchen to switch over the the lunch menu (it was shortly after 10 am), we were not provided with breakfast/brunch menus, and when we queried the server, she informed us the chef had discontinued breakfast/brunch service. After being moved to a table with a view, we asked our replacement server if we could get breakfast. She came back with the appropriate menus and did all she could to take care of us.
Our meal consisted of French toast for the table that was primarily the end of the loaf of bread with a larger proportion of crust and an inadequate amount of berries and butter mixture for the order, two orders of classic eggs Benedict that came with English muffins that were very hard and my wife ordered the crab cake Benedict. For $32 she was served a 1/2 of a muffin with one crab cake and one egg and absolutely nothing else, not a piece of fruit, not a full order (2 halves), not a garnish of any kind. Mindboggling.
After we left our daughter, distraught with the food, experience, and the cost ($133 + tip + parking) said, "We don't need to return to this place again."
When I took the time to write the manager and the Ramsay organization, I received back an acknowledgement from the organization stating they would be in touch, which has not occurred (10 days ago). I received a response from the manager after sending them an email a second time.
The response on the part of the manager was to invite us back for a meal. Had there been one issue, this would have been a generous offer. Unfortunately, from our arrival, the experience was not what it should have been, a table that fit the guest (my wife, who was celebrating Mother's Day) should have been the easiest request to fulfill, breakfast/brunch menus should have been easy too, and the food which given the place is Gordon Ramsay's should have been at least good - not hard muffins and 1/2 an order of a breakfast entrée on a plate with nothing else should have been guaranteed. But none of these were the case. The request for a refund of the bill was provided - we insisted that the server be paid her tip since none of this was her fault or responsibility.
Would we go back and pay the associated cost to have a meal at Ramsay's Kitchen or recommend it? NO! Countless great restaurants in STL will treat patrons well and serve excellent food - find one of...
Read moreFirst the good: The food and drinks were superb as you would expect a Gordon Ramsay restaurant. That is definitely worth the experience.
If you know me as a Google reviewer you know, I very rarely give low ratings. A Gordon Ramsay restaurant where you’re paying over $100 per person raises expectations.
A S**T show of awful communication and as a result horrible service.
We had a 4:45 dinner reservation since the online reservation system allowed a dinner reservation at 4:45. So that’s what we expected.
The hostess checked us in at 4:40 and then told us to sit in the bar area and pointed to some cramped tables and said sit there, like she was being inconvenienced. After seeing how cramped the tables were, we sat in an open area where there was a couch and tables which was much more comfortable.
We sat there for about 15 minutes and watched two groups come check in and get seated with us just sitting there. And no comment from the hostess, who was right there. I finally went back to the hostess and politely asked when our table was going to be ready and she said give me two or three minutes. Everyone in our party felt like we were being totally ignored.
About 10 minutes later they asked if we wanted the lunch or dinner menu and sat us in the bar area. We were the only people not sitting in the dining room. And believe me we were dressed nice to celebrate a birthday. Everyone else was dressed with in shorts and sandals so I don’t think it was because of our appearance.
After sitting at our table, a woman came up and asked us if we wanted bottled water or house water. We said house water and I asked for some lemon for the water and she said that would be fine. We never saw her again. And apparently she never communicated that to our waitress because I had to ask our waitress later for lemon for our water.
The waitress was just ok kind of like you to expect at any ordinary restaurant. She did start off with a little talk about how Gordon Ramsay wants to make you feel like family. LOL I guess if you grew up in a dysfunctional family, this would’ve felt totally normal.
What was interesting? there was an older man in a suit hanging around the hostesses station off and on while we were there. He was apparently completely oblivious to what was going on since apparently no one was communicating to him about our situation. In addition, I never saw him interact with any customers the entire time.
The ironic thing about all this is. They were probably doing us a favor seating us in the bar area. The dining area was completely packed largely with families with small children. If they had communicated and managed expectations, I think we would’ve thanked them instead of feeling like they could care less whether...
