I went expecting to be done in 15 minutes, but was pleasantly surprised with a tour through Blues history. As promised by the ticket agent, one area will have a bunch of blues musicians I've never heard of, but that was an awesome part. Seeing the rich history of blues and the people that gave the music heart.
There are a lot of interactive exhibits that are a lot of fun. Like stepping up the mixer board and learning how that job can make all the difference in how a song truly sounds. Mix it one time with a harmonica sound turned up, then put it in the background and turn up the guitar to find out you made a completely different song.
We also loved getting to play in the virtual blues band. When the lights kick on and you are displayed up on the video board playing your instrument along with the other players, it's fun... Even if you don't know a thing about making music. It might sound dorky, but it wasn't. My wife and I loved it. There are plenty of other interactive displays also.
We had a great time on our visit and very glad we went. If you are visiting St. Louis like we were, I highly recommend this visit and then head over to Pi's Pizza across the street. That combo gave us a very...
Read moreI had a wonderful time at the National Blues Museum. I've always considered myself a connoisseur of music popular within the Black community, but I could never make the distinction between Blues and Soul and, after this visit, I learned so much and now understand. The interactive panels weren't all working, but the ones that did were so stimulating and made you feel like a real musician, and I really dug now an entire gallery was open for local artists to contribute their works in paying homage to the Blues greats. It was so meaningful to be educated on lesser-known artists within the Blues genre. Their hits that were more popularly covered by others were amplified and showcased, and the artifacts were breathtaking. Attached is a live music venue with incredible musicians performing and is very well-attended. I have to give a very special shoutout to the manager on duty that day for helping me get in touch with a former St. Louis musician who helped foster my love of Soul and Blues. They were so encouraging and accommodating to where I should visit and who I should contact next. The staff top to bottom were wonderful. Thank you all for such a meaningful,...
Read moreVisited last week and it was a great experience. My wife and I attended the Thursday night jam session and were pleasantly surprised by the experience, not to say that we had low expectations, it was far better than we could have imagined. Three hours of fun live music and a few performers that left us in awe. For us the standout was a harmonica player and vocalist named Chuck Loeb. The best part is that these happen weekly, are free to watch and are live streamed so I can watch them weekly in Utah. I only wish they would list the names of the people who performed so I could mention more of them, it was really that good.
The next day we toured the museum and it was a cool experience. It is a basic museum but does a good job explaining the history of the blues in a way that anyone could understand. There are volunteers who are very helpful, the volunteer when we visited was actually Chuck Loeb and I couldn’t have been more pleased and he couldn’t have been more helpful. He even fired up the player piano and showed some of us how it is played.
This place is a must see when visiting St Louis and I will...
