Coming from a local Stauntonian, the best thing about this place is the art by local artist P. Buckley Moss. My boyfriend and I arrived around 11 am on a Saturday and every waitress (older white women) we interacted with was very grumpy. However, they made more of an effort to be friendly with the local regulars. The most friendly employee to everyone, including us, was a guy who graduated from the local high school one year before we did. We ordered the apple roll-up pancakes, which tasted dry and contrary to the menu, the apples came without the confections (sauce) and it tasted like industrially-packaged canned apples. We also ordered the eggs benedict with the ham on the side (I was going to give the ham to my boyfriend). The ham came on the benedict and after I took it off, gave it to my boyfriend (deciding not to say anything to the waitress because we were so hungry, I was just going to let it go), the waitress approached the table and said "now I know that ham didn't come like that," referring to the ham I just placed on his plate. She made uncomfortable eye contact, as if she was daring me to say something and ask for the meal to be made the way I originally asked for. We said things were fine just to get through the meal. When we asked for a to-go box (I don't know why we did, we just ended up tossing the food), the waitress asked if we got enough to eat, a phrase I've only been told by older people who judge others for leaving food on their plates or having leftovers. The blatant double standard among younger and older employees in the service industry, like Kathy's, continues to baffle me. Just because you are old does not give you the right to be disrespectful to others. You should have planned your life better so that you wouldn't still be working at your age. Younger employees are the most hardworking and kind service industry folks. If you enjoy bland food, ageism/whatever prejudism the waitresses have going on, this...
Read moreI visited on a Saturday morning as a waypoint returning from southwest Virginia. This establishment appeared to be one of a couple of breakfast places in Staunton and appeared relatively well reviewed. Talking with a couple of the staff members, this family business has benefitted from three generations with Kathy being the second generation and her son now running the majority of operations. The atmosphere proved both neighborhood-like and local, even with service that was both friendly and a little uneven attention-wise at the same time. I decided to order eggs and sausages alongside blueberry pancakes, a staple order of mine when visiting diners. Food took a little longer than what I would have expected given the customer volume, but the atmosphere and charm made up for my wait.
I liked the bright yellow color of the eggs as well as the predictably proper cook I tasted. The sausages had a pleasing crust and slight spiciness inside, although I wonder whether these sausages reminded me for some reason of commercial ones I used to eat growing up. The pancakes were a good size, feel, and taste. I would have appreciated more of the fresh-tasting blueberries, especially since summer marks the height of berry season. For the rest of my road trip, I ordered a pair of ham biscuits and an apple waffle. The biscuits were decent and could have used a couple more slices of ham to me. The waffle was quite good with a delightfully generous portion of cooked apples that covered nearly every inch of waffle.
My total bill came to around $35 excluding tax, and for the quantity and quality of food and service I felt satisfied with the value I received. I could make a return trip if I were in the area and have another waffle and maybe a couple of other...
Read moreI recently had the pleasure of visiting Kathy's Restaurant in Staunton, Virginia, and I can't stop raving about it! My friends and I decided to stop by on a whim, just shortly before closing time, and from the moment we walked in, we were met with nothing but genuine kindness and hospitality.
We ordered the pancake roll-ups, and wow, what a treat! The dish came with three fluffy pancake roll-ups, topped with a generous dollop of whipped cream, crunchy nuts, and perfectly ripe bananas. It was almost too beautiful to eat—almost! The flavors and textures blended together so well, making every bite absolutely delightful. I even took a photo before diving in because it looked that good.
One thing that stood out to me was how reasonably priced everything was. It's rare to find such high-quality food at such fair prices. Plus, Kathy's has a great selection of vegetarian options, which is always a bonus in my book.
The atmosphere of the place is cozy and inviting, and you can really tell that it's a beloved local spot. The staff made us feel right at home, and their friendly service added to the overall wonderful experience. It's easy to see why Kathy's has been a favorite in the community for so long. If you ever find yourself in Staunton, I highly recommend giving Kathy's Restaurant a visit.
Whether you're a local or just passing through, it's a must-try. I know I'll definitely be back next time I'm in town. Don't miss out...
