Just... Wow!
No joke. This was our first visit and we came for having a dessert experience different from the normal ice cream thing. Alcohol infused ice cream seemed like that might be different enough!
There a number of actual food items available here, but the star reason to come is in the name after all. In the spirit of a pub offering we each decided to order a flight of flavors. If you decide to do the same, be prepared. It was much more ice cream than expected! It really is hard to judge the size from the menu pic!
From alcoholic offerings we tried two: Kentucky Salted Caramel and Drunken Oreo. The flavors are smooth, well developed, and highly complementary. The texture is smooth, with a great mouth feel, and no evidence of over churning. Proof these were highly prized by this evening's tasters? Those who "just couldn't eat anymore" made certain they got their full shares!
Of the other six flavors: Chocolate OMG, Strawberries and cream, Oreo Mint, Caramel Crunch, Lemon Custard, and Key Lime Pie... Our winner was Key Lime Pie! Don't get me wrong, the others were great, but this is the very first Key Lime Pie ice cream to truly taste and live up to the name. The perfect punch of key limes with a small ribbon of crust finding its way in there also was simply amazing. I am glad this place is so far from the house! Otherwise our diet would be shot out from me bringing this home!
Last but not least, thank you O'Brien family for your commitment to our armed forces, fire/rescue, and police forces. We salute you and thank your family for their service in protecting our nation. I am a disabled veteran and just recently began working for our veterans. When my older patients tell me "thank you for your service" I tell them I am thankful for theirs, for if they had not gone before to such places as the Battle of the Bulge, I may very well have not had this country of ours to...
Read moreOne-of-a-kind, delicious Irish comfort food -- not just ice cream. Their "Shepherd's" Pie (made with beef?!?) is considered a favorite, and I concur. I found it to be flavorful, without being too salty. They have several kinds of sandwiches served with factory-made potato chips and imaginary pickle spear, including a philly cheesesteak panini, which is simple but fresh; however, you may want to request a fork with it, because about a third of the finely ground up meat will fall out into the plastic serving basket, and they do not bring forks with sandwiches apparently. Maybe if the melted cheese had been more carefully and evenly distributed, it might have held together better? Dessert choices are many and include more than just ice cream, the flavors of which vary from week to week. So far, my favorite is the key lime pie flavor; I was not blown away by the strawberries-and-cream, never mind its "blue ribbon" award. I found the double scoop cup ("Blarney") to be a reasonable serving size, but the "double scoop" waffle cone had to have at least four large scoops packed into it -- too much for me, especially if filled with one of their adult (alcohol-infused) flavors. It seems most people order takeout, but their homey dining room does offer bar seating as well as several booths and tables. The service is friendly, although our server seemed to be somewhat inexperienced and inattentive, and the kitchen was also rather slow, so I would not recommend this restaurant if you're...
Read moreReally one of the coolest little mom and pop places I've seen in the area. The owner is definitely cool and works right along with everyone else shoulder to shoulder His pride in the business definitely comes through with both the ice cream itself and the decor. The place really is a snippet of Irish culture.
On to the ice cream itself, which was nothing short of amazing. I went with my family of 5 with 3 kids 5 and under. I tried everyone's ice cream and it was all incredible. The butterbeer flavor was a stand out and rightfully so as it one a nationally recognized ice cream competition a few years back. We also dabbled in the alcohol infused ice cream, which you would think is gimmicky, but really it's not at all. The flavors are all blended well and really add to the flavor of the ice cream in a great way. Definitely a great place to hang out. I could definitely see someone leaving there with a light buzz just on ice cream, but especially because they serve beer and such as well.
It should be noted that they had a pretty incredible looking menu with crepes, waffles, sandwiches and paninis that all look great and culturally appropriate, but I'll have to try that next time and...
