It wasn't for us. Pizza is one of my favorite meals. It always has been due to a deep seeded core memory. I have a love of the pie. Whether I'm working in a pizza joint or just visiting for a meal, I'm always down to try the next place that I've never been to. Until...
My wife and I have tried a lot of the pizza places in our area and we've both worked at a few. We are bias to a couple that we frequent most of the time but one night we decided to try out Tacoma Pie. That is, after we finally realized that it is in fact a pizza place. At first glance while driving by, I had originally thought that it was a place to get literal pies or the sweet or savory variety. Once we realized that it was pizza pie, we were down. First thing we noticed was that the building is strange. Its long with some apartments in the back and the main area seems to have been a storefront. It has an attached garage area that is now the main dining room but overall, the whole place feels like a bar. They have a cool outdoor area, and they offer table games to play while you wait because what we were unaware of is that they specialize in deep dish. We were lucky enough to have gone on one of the days that they also offer a pub pizza or round thin crust style too, so we opted for one of each. I'm not a huge fan of deep dish but I do like the crispy corners on the crusts. What we didn't care for was their sauces. They go heavy on the sugars, and it makes the pizza just too darn sweet for our tastes. I don't presume to know the ingredients, but we were specifically told by the person helping us that they use sugars and that is why the crust caramelizes so nicely. They do supply a nice amount of whatever toppings you order but we just couldn't get over the sweetness. We each had a slice of each pie and took the rest home where our teenager said the same thing and then we did something I've never done before. We threw the pizza in the trash. It was so bad to us that we couldn't even finish it and I don't write this to dissuade you from going there. They had a lot of customers and I'm sure they have a large following of people who really like the food. For us, the price was a bit high for what we ordered, the service was slower than we expected and even after explaining that it was our first time visiting, we really received no instructions like where to find the plates and napkins etc... The shelf in the room might be considered self-explanatory but we also don't like to assume. If you haven't been to Tacoma Pie, I recommend that you go and see for yourself if you feel the way we do or not. They are a small local business doing their best to survive like the rest of them and that is...
Read moreI was out Dashing a little while ago and picked up an order there for a customer. The place was dead because it was getting late on a weeknight. But, the pizza smelled great, and when the guy cut it, I could tell the pepperoni and crust were nice and crispy, and I could see it had a heavy blanket of fresh mozzarella. So, I told myself I'd finally try the place with my boyfriend.
Tonight was the night. We ordered a pepperoni and sausage pizza online for $25, which included the two toppings under the BYO pizza option.
I cringe that a pizza costs upwards of $30, nowadays. But, it's a good size. Two slices is easily enough for your average pizza glutton. The crust is a thick deep-dish style, crispy on the edges, but fluffy inside. Almost a knife and fork kind of slice with the weight of the toppings. But, I'm not going to complain about generous cheese and toppings.
My boyfriend got sent in to grab the pizza a little early, and the guy asked him if he minded waiting for the cheese to set before he sliced it. My boyfriend appreciated that they take their time to do it right. He liked the atmosphere, too.
I will say that it could have done with some chili pepper flakes and maybe a little bit of a more flavorful sauce or sausage. I read some reviews before writing mine, and it sounds like people were upset about undisclosed chili pepper flakes. But, perhaps, have the option to add them on the online ordering system for those of us who like a little spice. I don't know, something was missing. It wasn't bland, but it wasn't an explosion of flavor, either. It needs a little something to elevate it. It has good bones. It just needs a little pizzazz.
But, overall, it was enjoyable and filling. Two slices each was plenty, and we have lunch or dinner for tomorrow for the both of us with the remaining four slices. Can't complain.
I'd try it, again. Maybe pepperoni and...
Read moreTacoma pi had been on my list to try for probably about a year. I was starving today, and really wanted pizza, and was looking at my saved places to try list which brought me here.
Let me just say, I am so mad I didn't try this earlier!
First thing is I was a little skeptical at the size of the pizza. I'm a big boy and my wife can put some pizza down herself, so when he told me that there was only one size I was like oh darn these prices are kind of high for a small tiny Pizza. Let me stop that thought process right here, THIS IS NOT A TINY PIZZA. What you're actually getting is 8 slices of deep dish, cheese to the crust, piled high toppings. My wife and I split it in half and each got four, and both of us could not eat that many slices, we each ended up taking home two slices. The ingredients tasted fresh, it took about 30 minutes to make the pie which says to me that it's not sitting on a warmer somewhere. I also want to point out, which I didn't get to try, they had like banana bread muffins/cinnamon roll things. Those looked amazing as well.
Service was wonderful too. The redhead guy was super helpful in explaining the way everything works and prices and making us feel like he valued us as a customer. I love the atmosphere too, they had the door open and you got to sit inside an inside area but have the nice breeze of being outside.
Literally the only downside that I would say, and this is so small, is a place like this, serving canned mug Root beer, kind of sucks. There are some really great local soda places, I truely wish they partnered with a local brand to sell their soda. A place this good shouldn't be held back by bad soda....also it should be on Fountain so that you could get a refill.
Super secret pro tip: get as many corner pieces as you can before other people realize how the corner pieces are most definitely...
