SHOUT THIS FROM THE ROOFTOPS—Smashburger on S. Dale Mabry is an ABSOLUTE GEM!!
Let me set the scene: I strolled in expecting a quick bite, but what I got was hands-down one of the best fast-casual dining experiences I’ve ever had in Tampa—if not anywhere. From the second we walked in, Jordan, our cashier, greeted us with the kind of energy and warmth that most restaurants wish they had on their best day. I’m talking professional, kind, funny, efficient—just an all-around rockstar. Jordan made us feel like regulars even though it was our first time.
Now onto the food: I ordered the Spicy Jalapeño Baja Burger and let me tell you—FINALLY, a burger that understands the assignment. Most places toss on a jalapeño or two and call it spicy. Not Smashburger. This burger brought the fire. It was bold, full-flavored, and actually spicy in a way that complimented the burger instead of overpowering it. I felt every bite in the best way possible.
Then came the Cookies & Cream Oreo milkshake… Listen. I’ve had milkshakes across the country. I’ve tasted so many “best ever” shakes that I’ve lost count. But this one? This was a MASTERPIECE. Whatever magic they put into that blend needs to be bottled and patented. Thick, creamy, not too sweet—every sip felt like a hug from childhood and a treat made by a Michelin-starred grandma. It was perfect.
But what sealed the deal for me—what made me want to write this passionate love letter of a review—was something deeper: They give back. As a nurse who’s worked long shifts, seen tough days, and often felt overlooked—seeing that they offer discounts for first responders and healthcare workers hit me right in the heart. That kind of respect and appreciation means everything, and it says a lot about who they are as a business.
Smashburger on Dale Mabry isn’t just a place to eat—it’s a place to feel appreciated, to enjoy food made with care, and to be reminded that excellent service still exists.
If I could give them a billboard or a front-page spread in the Tampa Bay Times, I would. They’ve earned it. They’ve earned me as a lifelong customer. And I hope you give them the chance to earn you too.

Read moreI wondered how yet another burger place could possibly bring anything new to the food scene. Smashburger adds some flair by providing considerably more options in a build-your-own format. They've taken "Have it your way," to a new level. Smashburgers' base burgers include beef, chicken, turkey, and black bean patties. Custom toppings like spinach, cucumber, and goat cheese are more upscale than a typical fast food place. Choice of buns include their standard issue egg bun, multigrain, spicy Chipotle, and gluten-free as an option as well. Top it off with a broad selection of cheese including blue and goat cheese as well as pepper jack and cheddar, and standard condiments make for a pretty tasty burger. I order the Classic Smash which includes smash sauce, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, and garlic pickles. The burger itself is beefy, and the toppings crisp and fresh. When I order they do not ask me about bun options and serve it with the standard egg bun which is too soft and sweet for my tastes. For a small upcharge I get Smashfries, french fries covered with Smash Sauce comprised of rosemary, Italian olive oil, and garlic. I don't really taste any of the rosemary or garlic. The burger, fries, and a soft drink are a little over $10, fairly high for a fast food burger place. It's called Smashburger because the patties start out as a loosely packed meatball which is then seasoned in house with melted sweet butter and an imported olive oil blend, and then smashed in process to sear the patti. Smashburger is a pumped-up burger restaurant. It's unique in that it allows eaters to craft their own burgers, fries and sides till their heart's content. SB also offer kids meals, shakes, and fresh salads as well. Many eateries offer build-your-own options these days. I wonder if Smashburger or has gone too far in offering four different types of buns, four different types of burger patties, a whole host of toppings for hundreds of combinations. It took the people in front of me literally five minutes talking to the cashier to figure out what they wanted. Settle down people. It's...
