Trujillo’s Diner Serves Some of the Best Burgers in Taos
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️☆
My family and I ordered three 1/3 lb burgers with everything on them along with a kid’s burger meal that came with fries and a drink. We also got four orders of home style fries. The young man who took my order over the phone was thorough, kind, and attentive.
The home style fries were delicious, almost like when you chop up potatoes and fry them into French fries at home. The burgers were thick, juicy, and tasted homemade. These burgers are among the best you can get in Taos. On one occasion while I was eating there, a gentleman went up to the counter to compliment them on how delicious the burger was. He said he travels across the country for work and eats at restaurants almost every day, and this burger was one of the best he had ever had. The portions are large and the price for what you get is also great. Everything was fresh and flavorful.
I like that most of the staff are local Taos youth who are polite and hard working. On my visits there have been a couple of times where an item was forgotten, but they were quick to fix it and bring it to me. They also offer unique fry options like ribbon fries, sweet potato fries, and the home style fries.
The only important feedback I have on my most recent visit there is on food safety. My daughter was the one who picked up our order, and when she went in, she saw the older gentleman employee who was making and serving fries grab the cooked French fries with a bare ungloved hand before packaging them. Unfortunately, she did not mention this to me until after we had eaten.
Her and I have both worked in the food industry and have had extensive food safety training and food safety management training. This is a significant food safety issue, which I am sure the owners are aware of and will not be thrilled to hear about. I am sure the owners will address this with the staff promptly and make sure sanitary standards are always followed, especially by older adult staff who should be setting the example for the younger team members. As someone who has also managed fast food, I understand that no matter how many times staff are trained, there will always be occasions when they need correcting and reminders. That being said, this does not necessarily speak for the entirety of the staff or restaurant, but rather appears to be.. and hopefully is just an isolated incident.
Overall, Great food, great service, and definitely...
Read moreI have to admit, I wasn't sure we were even entering a dinner. It looks like it's in an old gas station next to a car wash that's been converted, but sometimes these small places are the best. Clearly, the city loves this place as it was hopping, which is always a good sign. 👍 We were greeted by the very friendly man behind the register, who I assume is the owner. He could tell we were first-timers as we stared at the menu. He politely recommended the taquitos saying people from California say it is better than what they have. We tried an order of 6: 3 chicken, 3 beef. All were terrific, and the salsa was fresh and delicious. We were drawn by the beautiful drinks, the Butterfly Pea lemonade with fresh mint, and a hibiscus flower. It was as good as it looked and very refreshing. My wife and I both tried the "build your own burritos" with pulled pork, beans, and cheese. I had mine fried and smothered with green sauce, my wife tried hers not fried with red sauce. The red was very mild, and the green had a flavorful kick to it. I saw a half and half, which I think would be great. But we both loved the very filling burritos. My older son tried the burger with cheese and hand cut fries and loved it. My younger daughter had the kids cheese quesadilla with the spiral cut potatoes, which were something between fries and chips. These were amazing, and had I known they were that good, I'd have gotten a whole plate to myself. Everyone had a smile on their face, those who worked there and all the customers. One of them, eating the taco Tuesday special, and clearly within earshot of the owner, jokingly told me to go to the restaurant two streets down as they have better food. I asked him if it's so good then why are you eating here? He said they pay him to eat there. 😆 The owner laughed. I highly recommend swinging by and trying Trujillo's Diner. I don't think there's a bad thing on the menu, and everything tastes fresh and delicious. And you just can't beat the...
Read moreOur experience with Trujillo's has been exceptional. The food is great. We had hamburgers on one of our visits and they were NOT pre-made patties but rather delicious, handmade, "did not look like the y were made in a mold" burgers but more like we make at home. My husband had the tamale pie just today and can't stop raving about it. We rarely miss Taco Tuesday as it is such a great deal for such delicious food. I admit to being addicted to their Ribbon Fries and can't seem to be able to go in there without ordering them. My daughter loves their variety of organic ice teas and we found out that there are flavors like Black Watermelon that are in our future.
What makes Trujillo's truly exceptional, however, are the people who work there including the owner! They are friendly, remember you and you can count on great service - always. We are new to Taos, we pretty much don't go a week without a trip to their establishment and are always thrilled by the food, the welcome and the number of people who are locals supporting a great family-owned business. Highly recommend and we are committed to trying everything on the...
