Great Wall — Restaurant in Tehachapi

I always eat from the buffet so I try to get to the restaurant around dinner time (5pm-6pm) so the food is nice and fresh. And even when the dishes run low, the staff is very expedient at filling them back up. Not the best Chinese food I've had, but they've really been stepping up their food game lately. Sadly, some great eats have disappeared (looking at you, short ribs), but other dishes have significantly ramped up in quality. The dumplings used to be, quite frankly, not good at all. But something must have changed because I never sit down without a few on my plate. The orange chicken, too, is now made with higher quality meat than years past. The staff is always very friendly and only sometimes refill my drink with the wrong flavor soda. They do tend to bring me my check when I'm only halfway through eating, and I'm pretty sure it's their way of subtly telling me to GTFO, but that's probably my fault for...

Small buffet but the food was great. Perfect textures and flavors. Nothing was soggy or bland or weird tasting; there was no old, burnt oil taste or smell like at most buffets. This place is a gem. Came here Valentine's after 1st dinner option had an hour long wait and I'm glad we did. The hot food was surprisingly good; all crispy stuff was crisp, sauces had nice, subtle but clear flavors (no weird chemical flavors), meats were cooked but not overcooked. Sushi bar was cold, but fresh and tasted fine; the one complaint might be I got a hint of melon in it? But it was still enjoyable. The desserts were surprising; I expected strong, overly sweet fruity or tropical flavors from the orange colored cake slices and instead got this delicate, slight flavor, like orange whipped cream and the cake was a nice, soft, only subtly sweet angel food type. One of the best things in their buffet selection was the BBQ chicken. The least desirable was their chow mein. It was really soggy and was sitting there a few hours already. The veggie egg rolls were tasty, the hot and sour soup was adequate, orange chicken was good, pepper shrimp was pretty good but could be a little more crispy. Servers were able to anticipate when our glasses were empty. Overall a decent visit and for a party of 4 adults and 2 children, bill came out to around $80, half of our party ordered sodas too.
