I took my brother-in-law in to get a Chicago style beef & hot dog as I'm originally from the Chicago area and wanted him to experience Chicago style food.
We dined in late afternoon 2:30-3:00 PM because we had a busy schedule that day and stood at the vacant customer counter while three employees casually finished up a conversation about a local bar one enjoyed attending. 🚩
Eventually an employee acknowledged us but as we started to order the employee then paused us and walk over to one of the employees he had been originally conversing with to communicate additional information on the bar he had just remembered and couldn't wait to pass on🚩
This provoked a comment from my brother-in-law more or less "WTF"?
Upon the order takers return, I ordered a Beef (dry) w/ sweet, fries and a drink for my brother-in-law and a dog with grilled onions, no peppers, fries and a drink for myself.
When we got our order the bun for the Beef was soggy crust to crust and devoid of the green peppers. 🚩
My hot dog was correct but the grilled onions were so greasy the hot dog drained oil. Not just dripped oil but actually ran oil and completely soaked a pair of napkins. 🚩
Both our fries were cold and the sodas went flat before we had a chance to even to eat.
I went to the counter with our food to complain and was given green peppers in a cup and the employee said that they knew the CO2 was low but hadn't had a chance to switch it out because of the lunch rush. 🚩 (The lunch rush ended an hour before).
As a soda is as important as any other portion of the meal, knowing it isn't to standards, and then not correcting it is unforgivable. 🚩
I asked why he didn't want to address the soggy bread & greasy hot dog and he said ALL beef sandwiches get soggy because the beef is in an au jus and my hot dog had grilled onion which are cooked in oil. 🚩
They made one order of fries, gave us some green peppers and said when they got around to changing the CO2 they'd let us know.
When asked why I only got one order of fries? I was told because we had each eaten some of ours. I countered with we hadn't really and as proof neither sandwich had been bitten.
That didn't faze the employee who simply ignored my comment.
My brother-in-law and I went to the restroom to wash up our hands soiled from our meals and left without ever biting our entrees.
We went to a different restaurant in the same mall where we had a pleasant meal.
Off hours are often a good measure of a restaurant as it requires good training and an understanding of quality control that can be less impactful when a facility is busy.
When there are dozens of meals on order, fries (for example) are made & used so rapidly that they are always going to be hot.
I can't say all Portillo's in the valley are the same as this one but I'll never know because I won't risk ever trying.
Some may wonder why I didn't ask for a refund, I had already spent 25+ minutes trying to simply eat and still needed to fulfill that task. Adding more time to get a refund was just wasting even...
Read moreAbout 5ish today 7/25/2025 my family and I went to this Portillos location in Tempe. We just moved to Arizona the beginning of the year. With seeing all the videos of this place on tik tok and Facebook, we finally made it to have dinner. First off, the place looks amazing on the inside with the decorations and it was really clean! :) But getting to the counter was a different story! The young man running the register was one of the rudest and had the absolute worst customer service I have ever had in my entire life! We walked up and he just looked at us so I said hey, this is our first time here. He just gave me the look of oh god, here we go without saying a word. While we are still trying to look, (my wife, 1 teenager, 1 preteen, our 2 yr old nephew and I) we let another customer go ahead of us as we hadn't decided and didn't want to old the line up to much. He continued to tap his fingers on the cash drawer for us to hurry up, then called for help on the microphone by the register and slammed it so hard that it bent to the front of the counter. I said wow! That wasn't necessary as he just looked at me like I was stupid. We let another group go ahead of us and by this time I was sooo just shocked at how we had been treated that I told my family we will be going somewhere else and that this was ridiculous. Even the mom in the group that had just gone in front of us was astonished. We started to walk to leave and I stopped to let a manager know of this incident and let him know that this young man should not be working the register. He just said sorry. So my family and I decide to go try Mods pizza across the way for the first time! Great customer service there and when I said this is our first time here he actually explained how everything worked and didn't just give me a blank stare. I understand having bad days, believe me, I do but if your day is that bad that you can't even be bothered to greet a customer especially one who mentions they've never been there before, you should, if anything, be in a different position for your...
Read moreThe reason I’m leaving this low review is the experience I had with this place last night when I went in to do a take out order. First after I placed my order I went over to the side bar to grab a cold beer and the woman that wears dark frame glasses just looked at me about 5 feet away and just said you need anything? I was like wow really?!!! No smile very rude and when I told her I would like to get a beer it was all attitude from the time she handed my beer to how she gave me my change back. No Customer service at all!! Then when I finally got my food and drove home got in my house and one of my orders were not in the bag. It was my chicken tenders that was not in my food bag. So I called Portillos 4times kept getting the run around and finally I just gave up. So I called back today and was able to speak with the manager Roy and i explained to him what happened and all he said was for me to call there guest experience line cause there was nothing he could do to get me my chicken tenders. But I did receive my ranch packets but not my tenders. I even told Roy I still have my receipt and when I come back to place another order for food can I just get my chicken tenders and he still said no. So I advised Roy I’m going to leave a review and I’m going to tell all my family and friends about this experience and all of my social media networks about this and no more Portillos!!! We will not be spending our money at a place like this never again. Oregano and Grimaldi’s for and Ted’s Hotdogs...
