Red River Cantina serves some stellar Tex-Mex dishes in a beautiful, spacious, instagrammable space! Vibe: Everytime we pass by this place, it's always packed, and our dining experience was no different. We came on Father's day, which was an even more crowded time, and we ended up waiting 45 minutes which wasn't surprising. There's a lot of outdoor patio space to wait with tables and chairs, and a decent amount of space indoors to wait as well. The exterior and interior of the restaurant are beautifully decorated, and you may want to snap a selfie in almost every spot. Inside, each dining area has a slightly different experience and ambience, which is really cool. Lots of space and seating makes it a good place for parties- we had a party of 12 and we were seated comfortably. Service: Once we were seated, the servers were extremely attentive and kind. They got all 12 of our orders correct, kept our drinks full, and rotated out the chips and salsa regularly. Food: The table ordered a variety of things, including beef and chicken fajitas, enchiladas, taco salad, carnitas, and pollo marisco. Everyone was impressed by the food and found it incredibly delicious! The chips and salsa were standard fare, nothing special. We personally had the taco salad and carnitas. The taco salad was enormous and included some perfectly cooked steak atop a huge bed of lettuce and other veggies, and a big crunchy tortilla! It's definitely enough for more than 1 person honestly. Everything tasted fresh, and the steak was tender and flavorful. The carnitas was equally amazing. We were surprised to find that it was not shredded, but whole pieces, which was concerning at first as I thought it may be dry. Instead, it was very juicy, tender, and packed with flavor! Definitely one of the best carnitas I have ever had, and the sautéed onions were a great complement to the meat. It also comes with guac, red onions, lime, and flour tortillas so you can make some killer tacos. It's a little expensive, but standard pricing for good Tex-Mex, and 100% worth it in our opinion. Overall, Red River Cantina is an excellent Tex-Mex restaurant that is definitely worth the wait if you are looking for delicious Tex-Mex. This place is Let's Eat Houston approved! ✅️

Appetizer- Pork Tamales were not bad just didn’t have strong flavor. The masa was kind of sweet. Came with a side of diced onions, tomatoes, jalapeños, cilantro mix and green lemony salsa. The best part of the appetizer was that the tamale wasn’t super dry or overly mushy. Comes with 3 tamales. Main entree- The enchiladas were super cheesy and came with 3 pieces of shrimp and 3 pieces of scallop. The flavor was lacking in some areas and was in desperate need of salt. Came with avocado, cilantro rice, and black refried beans. Best part of this plate was the shrimp as they had a bit more flavor than anything else. The rice was 2nd. Dessert- chocolate cake with whipped cream, strawberry and side of vanilla blue bell ice cream. The cake was a let down as it tasted dry and a bit burnt. The plate came with 2 small pieces of cake and 1 sliced strawberry. The best part of this was the blue bell ice cream. The service was consistent and the waiter made sure to check on us but was not overbearing. Busy day but he still gave us plenty of attention. Was nice and polite. Food came out while it was still hot and in an a timely fashion. Great on that. Atmosphere- it seems more laid back as a lot of servers were standing towards the back. Which made it seems more down to earth here. A gentleman walked around in a Taco costume and definitely was a highlight of the dinner. Music was playing at a good level enough to have a conversation but still sing along with the lyrics of the song. The best thing about this was Tex mex vibe and the inviting appeal the plants added to the atmosphere. It was clean and cool dining in. The worse part was the extremely dangerously hot plate of food along with the the dirty cup I was given with a refilled soda. Over all would not come back due to the lack of flavor and the disappointing taste of the entire meal.

First time at RRC and I was not impressed. The placement of the hostesses table is in the worst spot to accommodate a nice flow of people coming in. When arriving the hostesses were talking about personal matters and and didn’t even acknowledge me and talked over me as I was trying to get a table. It took awhile for our waitress to get to our table who was also not the friendliest. Looking at the happy hour menu we realized only the drinks were HH price at the table and the food was HH price at the bar. Our waitress was snippy when asking why the HH Food was at the bar. Never heard of that for a HH special. We order the Queso Blanco and it was so hard we couldn’t even put a chip in there. Silverware was dirty. The enchiladas were dry… how do you make dry enchiladas? Mexican Rice was undercooked. They have a window for you to look into the kitchen… honestly I kinda wished I didn’t. I saw a man scooping out the rice on to trays… I noticed he shook off old food or something that was on the tray off into the trash can and used the SAME tray to scoop the freshly cooked rice on… like really… did I just see him touch the trash can with the tray and put rice on there. Also he was not wearing gloves while preparing food. So his thumb would get stuck under the rice. Not only did that gross me out, we saw gnats and flies on the window on the kitchen side… I can only imagine where they’ve landed. The manager did come by to apologize for the Queso and offered a free dessert but honestly we just wanted to get out of there. Well…we tried but unfortunately will not be coming back.

This is an incredibly horrible run establishment from top to bottom. We came here on the 2nd day of opening and it wasn't the best but we figured they were still trying to get it together so we get it. We figured after 5 months or so they would have it together but WOW we were very wrong. It's even worse now. We went there last night so we already figured on a Saturday it would be busy so we had a 20 minute wait. When we were finally sat at 7:40, half the tables were empty so not really sure what we were even waiting for. Once we got sat we had no silverware and nobody came to our table for about 10 minutes. My wife had to go get silverware from someone and when we got it, it was filthy. Filthy enough we opted to get to go silverware. We had 5 adults and someone brings us 1 bowl of salsa and 1 bowl of chips. We asked for more Salsa and she brought us 1 more bowl of Salsa. 5 adults 2 bowls of salsa. Our waitor looked lost and confused the entire night. We ordered our food and it took us 1 hour to get it and it wasn't even busy. When we finally got it, 2 of us got our food, 1 of us got the food but it was completely wrong and had to be sent back. The other 2 in our party didn't get food until the incorrect order was brought back out and 1 order was only rice and beans so it took well over an hour for just rice and beans. The food wasn't that good. It is not fresh made. My wifes enchiladas were terrible and the sauce and queso taste and looks jarred or canned. The food is very bland, not fresh and all canned, jarred, or frozen. We asked to speak to the manager. We had 2 waitors tell us that there is only 1 manager on duty and they are in the kitchen busy. That is not acceptable if a customer has an issue that needs addressed. Our waitor asked if we were joking when we asked to speak with a manager. Also unacceptable. Some guy came by our table and claimed to be a manager and we told him everything. He apologized and then disappeared. Then a woman that apparently was the manager came by and I asked if the other guy had filled her in and she said no so there is obviously no communication or structure here. We told her all of our complaints and she said she was going to take care of the food for us. We also ordered margaritas which I will say were pretty good. Well after she left our table we expected her to come back to our table with our final check so we could pay and leave...Nope. Never even came back so we walked out and left. There was a table behind us that did the same thing. It was a little after 9 and they had been waiting for their food since 8 and also had a couple of margaritas and they ended up leaving also. It is a shame because this restaurant is very nice and in a great location but have an extreme lack of training when it comes to their management and the owners I'm sure are unaware of the money they are having walk out of the door because the staff here truly just doesn't care. Not much of an effort from the staff. The lack of training shows and I would think that after being open for around 5 months now they would have it together but they don't. Honestly if you want really good mexican food close by, go to Pablo's. It is a little more expensive but trust me, once you eat the food you'll understand why. There is just no comparison in quality of the food. We will not be going back here and I would advise others to stay away to. I'm assuming all the issues we had are a reason why it wasn't that busy on a Saturday night when all other restaurants in the area...

Have been dying to try this place since returning from summer travels. It’s right across from all the popular fast food restaurants so we pass it often but it’s almost always packed. Decided to try it out on a Saturday night with some friends and 5 children in tow. Upon arrival we were told it would be a 40 minute wait, no problem.

We headed to the bar and took some seats on the patio. The kids played on their “lawn” and we enjoyed some margaritas while watching sports and chatting. The atmosphere was lovely & we even talked about coming back on a Sunday next time to enjoy football over good food and drinks!

Imagine our surprise when an hour and 30 mins go by, and we still haven’t been called. After continuing to check on our place on the waiting list & repeatedly being told they don’t have a table for us (despite an entire section of the restaurant being empty) we decided to remove our names from the waiting list and just take our kids to chick fil a since they were literally crying from how hungry they were at that point.

One of the other hostesses informs me that our table had been ready 10 mins ago & they even called and texted. I told her that was physically impossible as I had just been to the hostess stand 5 mins prior and told our table still wasn’t ready, and we also haven’t received any calls or texts. At that very moment the hostess sent the text and i got the notification as we were speaking.

Extremely upset over how the situation had been handled at that point, I asked for a manager. I waited and she came after a few mins where I expressed to her everything that happened and how frustrating it was to have 5 kids who are starving and wait over twice as long as the wait time we were informed. I was carrying my 3 year old who was crying and screaming he was hungry the entire time I was talking to the manager.

She heard me out and apologized, asked us to stay and informed us we’d be taken care of as a priority. We decided to stay and they immediately brought out free appetizers and put the kids meals orders in to be brought out first.

The drinks were great, the food was average. I think because they were rushing to accommodate us, there were just things that were missing from the order. Our fajitas only came with onions and no peppers, etc.

I thought there chips and guac was great and the meat for the fajitas was tender and delicious. My kids didn’t enjoy the Mac n cheese but I guess that’s what they get ordering American food at a Mexican restaurant lol

Overall, I’m hoping to have a better experience the next time I go and I hope this feedback improves their communication style when there are delays in wait times for big parties or better training on how to accommodate parties who are well over the wait time they were originally told. It wasn’t a good feeling to be a stressed parent trying to calm hungry kids down so you continue to check on the status of the wait list, just to be told immediately after a table has already been ready for you & you could’ve already...

We went on Saturday 8/26 for dinner and it was quite busy. We had a party of 8 (5 adults and 3 children) so the estimated wait time was 30 minutes which seemed fair. After 30 minutes we were still not seated so I looked around and noticed both of their large corner booths were empty and clean so I asked the hostess if we could sit there. She had an epiphany and realized we could have been seated earlier had they been paying attention so already we are off to a rough start.

Our server was very nice but he immediately had to apologize as they did not have any chips and the kitchen had to make more. Really? What kind of Tex-Mex restaurant runs out of chips on a weekend? We should have just left right there and then but decided to stay to see if they could turn things around. We ordered kids meals for the kids and beef fajitas for the two adult couples. I ordered a salad but requested no olives and no tomatoes. Our server double checked my request and off he went.

Our food arrived timely and they were fine for the most part. The beef fajitas were cooked well and the flour tortillas are huge which was very nice. The chips did eventually arrive and they were fine. We received 2 cups of red sauce but only 1 cup of green sauce. We requested an additional green sauce but our server must have forgotten as we never did get that 2nd cup. We asked for a 2nd serving of tortillas which also never arrived.

My salad was the last to arrive and I was disappointed to see there were still tomatoes in it. Our server apologized and took the dish back to the kitchen to correct it. After a bit of waiting, he brought my salad back and there were still tomatoes in my salad. At this point I was pretty fed up so I asked for a to-go box and I'll just pack the salad for my sister as I'm sure she would like it.

Now maybe I could have just picked out the tomatoes myself. Maybe I'm just being too picky. Or maybe I could have a mild tomato allergy and coming in contact with tomatoes could trigger a reaction. The point is, asking to omit a single ingredient from a basic dish like a salad is a very simple request. The kitchen had TWO opportunities to get this dish correct and they still could not get it right.

Oh well, at least they'll comp the salad to make up for the mistake right? Wrong. They had the audacity to still charge us for the salad even after all that. I had to speak to a manager to get this corrected.

Overall, we had a very disappointing experience. I see no reason why you would choose a sub-par restaurant like this place when you can find excellent Tex-Mex restaurants everywhere in the greater Houston area. Hard pass for me. We...
