Labor Day fiasco. They were out of everything we ordered—according to one lady. The next lady said they had everything we had originally ordered. As of 6 pm—they were out of nearly everything on the specials board at the entry way. Yet—the board was still up—with all specials still listed. The first appetizer “tamal cubano” was cold in the center and there was no meat for the first 1 1/2” in. We sent it back. The second one was nuked properly. The ham croquette (3) was edible. We asked for a sangria—shocker, they were out of that, too. They were out of mofongo, so second choice was fried pork chunks. Which, they originally said they were out of. The pork was icy in the middle. It wasn’t raw, which means it was precooked and not heated properly. We sent it back. I ordered the mahi mahi and shrimp, which one lady said they were out of. The next lady said they had one left. It smelled delicious, but the fish was overcooked. The shrimp was decent. Quickly tasted the black beans—to check temperature. They were seasoned well. Once we said we weren’t paying for the dinner, it took the manager a solid eight minutes to come out and address the issue—which he tried to give us excuses. Won’t be back. Wouldn’t even take the free food to go.

Rice and Bean must be one of my favorite restaurants in the Cypress area. I have never had a dish I didn't love. The red snapper is soft and delicious, shrimp are large and flavorful, all perfectly cooked. The sandwiches are great for a quick lunch. Their fried yuca is also awesome. Grilled pork has to be one of the best dishes. The real bragging rights go to the chef for his beans and his plantains. The fried plantain appetizer is wonderful, and the lime sauce that comes with it is perfectly complemented to the flavors of the plantain patty. The beans on every dish are flavorful and to die for. Plantains on the min dishes are also cooked perfectly EVERYTIME. As for the desert the flan is good and the espresso is rich. I am a repeat diner, and will continue to come back to some of the best food Cypress has to offer. If you do have a mediocre dish, I would recommend you give this place a second chance.

Took my wife to dinner here for our anniversary, to try our first Cuban restaurant. One thing I especially enjoyed at this place, is they have a great selection of sodas from the region. I tried the mofongo with pork, along with an apple soda. My wife tried the mofongo with shrimp. The mofongo was great. A thick patty of green plantains with pork rinds in it, topped with onions and cilantro. It was delicious. Mixed with the pieces of pork, which were juicy and succulent, with a deliciously crispy outer edge. Cutting into it, you hear a crunch, and then the it slices through juicy pork. The shrimp is cooked in a garlic sauce, and they poured the sauce on top of the mofongo. The shrimp was cooked perfectly, and juicy. For dessert we tried their Tres Leches cake which was soft and delicious. Everything was wonderful.

Short summary: go to Punta Cana instead. See below for the reasons why.

The owner of this place is unapologetically rude and not customer service oriented. The place only serves Mofongo with shrimp or pork. Granted it is sometimes served like this but the cook refused to make a no pork/seafood order of Mofongo even when we wanted to order a beef or chicken dish to eat with it. Our waitress tried many ways to get the order to us, even so far as to order Tostones and request that it be mashed and combined with garlic. The cook/owner still refused. No middle ground was offered. The man acted like he was a culinary chef who was offended by an order not off his menu. If you want good Cuban/Dominican/Puerto Rican style food that will make your order the way you like, head to Punta Cana by Willowbrook mall. The owner needs to get his head out of his...
