My wife and I took our teenage daughter here for breakfast. It had just opened a few days before. We all really like breakfast food and were eager to try this place for the first time. The first thing that caught my eye was the slogan on the employee's t-shirts that read "It's never too early to get toasted". I thought it was an odd saying until I was handed a drink menu to go along with the food menu. I was surprised at the wide variety of alcoholic beverages at a breakfast restaurant. Also, our server attempted to interest us several times in ordering alcohol - at 8:30 in the morning?? They should add a subtitle to the restaurant that says "The Toasted Yolk - A Breakfast BAR".
As we sat down, we all realized how freezing cold the restaurant was. At 8:30 in the morning, all of the ceiling fans were blowing and the AC was cranked. My wife had to change where she was sitting because she was so uncomfortable. When we mentioned it to the waitress, she said the staff members get so hot running around that she liked it. The restaurant's colors and décor are bright and cheerful. My daughter didn't like the colors and mentioned that to me, but I thought it added a cheery ambiance to the place.
When we ordered our food, the waitress asked me what side I wanted so I ordered a pancake. Then she told me I couldn't order that as a side even though the menu listed it as a side. She later came back and told me that she had been wrong and I had been correct. When our food came, my daughter's eggs were not cooked as she ordered (she ordered over medium, they came over easy) and my wife's food did not include ingredients she ordered. The food we got was fairly good, with some exceptions. The biscuits tasted like they had been made hours earlier and left under a heat lamp - not fresh at all. The pancake was huge and tasty. Sausage, scrambled eggs were also on point. My wife and daughter liked the hash brown casserole.
I was surprised when the bill totaled nearly $50 for our three breakfasts (I expected closer to 35ish). As I reviewed the bill, I discovered that I was charged for the side that she asked me to order - leading me to believe it was included in the price. Each of our meals was around $12 and we ordered 2 coffees at about $2.50 apiece. Generally speaking, I think everything was about 20% more expensive than it was worth.
I would hope that the ordering and cooking errors will be ironed out soon since they only opened a few days ago. The prices however, seem a bit high, especially since the food is just regular eggs, biscuits, pancakes, etc. I do not plan on going back to this overpriced and underwhelming...
Read moreI guess we're gluttons for punishment, as the saying goes. The food itself is not bad, if you steer clear of their hashbrown casserole, which is really just tasteless mush. My son said it best when he quipped that the cook(s) must be averse to using seasoning. He had ordered the Southern Arnold. For my part, I was pretty satisfied with my East Coast Arnold. It was satisfyingly savory.
You know what wasn't satisfying? Being deliberately ignored by waitstaff. This isn't the first time this has happened with our family at only this location, so it's not a Toasted Yolk issue, it's a Toasted Yolk - Valley Ranch issue.
Our visit began promisingly. Our family of five arrived just after 8 a.m. and were promptly seated at a spacious corner booth at the rear of the restaurant. We perused our menus, not immediately concerned that we hadn't yet been waited on. But a quarter of an hour later, as more families arrived and were seated and brought their drinks we did begin to question why a waiter or waitress hadn't yet stopped by. In fact, a waitress with an unpleasant expression, very deliberately and pointedly made eye contact with us only to turn heel and quickly walk away. More than once. Twenty minutes passed..
Finally, I flagged a waiter down, who looked for all the world as if he would have preferred to ignore me.
Long story short, a young waitress with a bewildered expression finally stopped in and took our order. It should be noted that she wasn't waiting on other tables, just ours. What that could mean, who can say?
At the end of our meal, when she brought us the check, she stammered an apology for the initial wait and said it was a mistake.
She's right. It was OUR mistake to continue to patronize an establishment that treats its customers so shabbily. And judging by other reviews and our own past experiences at THIS particular location, it's definitely something they...
