I had what felt like a very racist-Karen experience today. I want the daytime Karen manager or owner to know that i got her message loud n clear, that my beautiful African-America self is not welcome here.
Thank God there's plenty of southern cuisine restaurants in Houston to choose from. I won't be spending anymore of my green dollars at her whites welcomed only establishment.
I just found this establishment two month's ago. It's my 3rd time eating here. The service is more than exceptional. Including today my server was very kind and thoughtful.
I just left the ice cream shop across the highway and saw Victor's restaurant abbd decided to order a porkchop plate To-Go but my ice cream was melting in the car.
The thoughtful waitress offered to keep it frozen for me while i wait. However, i really wanted to eat it.
I ate two bites before the Karen manager came to tell me i couldn't eat my ice cream while i wait for my to-go order because it was a healthcode violation to eat outside food in their establishment, just incase i might get sick in the 15 minutes while waiting on my to-go order.
We all know this rule is true. Most restaurants ecercise common sense. The racist part was in her smug condesending delivery.
I express to her that Im a Veteran with a walking disability and I am an obvious senior citizen.
I asked how much longer would the order take because of my diffilculty walking. She replied "not much longer because we have to cook it first, we can't serve you raw meat." I left to wait in my car and 10 minutes later the nice waitress that took my order bought my food out.
Would this same manager would prevent mother from feeding her baby babyfood or a bottle? Both are outside food. Or maybe take a lollipop from a toddler just to prevent choking while the parent waited on a to-go order.
It was clear the manager was being indifferent in her interaction with me. She never spoke when i entered but kept walking past me and the server that took my order as we were talking.
She only spoke to tell me in a nice-nasty way to go outside in a "jim crow law" tone as if she'd rather I wait at the backdoor near the trashcan for my food.
Again, i want to reinerate that this was my 3rd visit but first time during afternoon shift. The food and service is usually exceptional. However, being treated inhuman has made me rethink supporting this business.
Sincerely, Offended ex customer
Ps: I got my food home and my plate wasn't fit for a dog. The fried pork chops were not even porkchop meat. The rice was a ball of glue. The toasted roll bread that I paid extra for was not toasted. I threw it in the garbage. The salad was decent. Yeah, I'm done. $20...
Read moreDon't make the same mistake I did: I've lived in this area going on 11 years and had never stopped in until today. To quote Cher, "If I could turn back ti-ime," I would. And so did Victor's, in a way.
So few traditional vintage delis remain, but this is a real one. It's a 1970s time capsule, with Tudor style wood beams on the ceiling, black-and-white tile under red booths, vintage Boar's Head posters, "led" style glass on partitions, chandeliers for no reason (but I love them) among 1970s style light fixtures. The charm can't stop, won't stop.
We were greeted by a friendly host who took us to our booth; he made us feel immediately welcomed.
The menu is huge, so it took a little while for me to figure out what I wanted, and our server was patient with me and answered my questions.
The coffee hit just right while I made my decision.
I decided on a French toast meal with eggs over easy and hashbrowns, and I added a side of three sausage links.
My husband had already decided on chicken fried steak with eggs over medium, hashbrowns and white toast. A white gravy came with his meal.
A note about the hashbrowns: I had a hankering for them, and originally, we were going to go to Deny's. Now, there's nothing wrong with Deny's, but Victor's hashbrowns beat out every other hashbrown I've ever had. So crispy on the outside yet so soft and buttery on the inside. It's worth its weight in gold. A labor of love, if you will.
Our server was wonderful, checking on us often enough that we felt well taken care of, but not so much that it was intrusive. I also noticed great teamwork among the staff. They all worked together to keep drinks filled and tables clean at all times.
All in all, this place delighted me from my eyes to my eventually full stomach.
So many things on the lunch and dinner menu call my name, and I'm certain it won't be long before we return to explore more good eats here.
If you're looking for a true vintage, quality diner, you'll find it...
Read moreI went to Victor's Restaurant today to take my mother to breakfast. This was my second time visiting Victor's. The first time I just ordered your basic eggs, bacon, and sausage with pancakes. It was absolutely delicious, but just a general breakfast. Today I must leave a review.
I ordered the corned beef hash and eggs with pancakes. My mother had the same but with a biscuit. It was absolutely phenomenal! First of all, they are always very generous with the portions. The eggs and hashbrowns were perfectly cooked. My pancakes were large, light and fluffy (of course, not to mention delicious)! I tasted the biscuit as well, and it was absolutely wonderful too.
Now, let's get to the corned beef hash. It was absolutely stupendously delicious!! Great corned beef hash is not the easiest thing to find in Houston or the South, but this even tops or at least equals any of the best corned beef hash I've ever had in the Northeast. As full as I was, not even able to finish my pancakes, if you would've put another few pounds of that hash in front of me, I would've found a place for it!
The staff, especially the gentleman who waited on us, was wonderfully friendly and helpful. Even though it's a half hour drive, I will be headed to Victor's again very very soon!
Thank you so much for such a terrific...
